Spillman6
Looking to supplement our Abeka History with living books. Thinking: "A Tale of Two Cities" or "City of Darkness, City of Light" "The Scarlet Pimpernel" What are your favorites or a favorite go to resource. Chrysalis Academy
My dd really enjoyed The Lacemaker and the Princess – Kimberly Brubaker Bradley The Scarlet Pimpernel is great too!
Osaubi
Marie Antoinette: Princess of Versailles, Austria-France, 1769 (The Royal Diaries) is what my ds is reading now for the French Revolution.
3andme
We enjoyed In Search of Honor. The main character is a boy who becomes entangled in the revolution and ends up in the Bastille. It gives a nice feeling for the fervor of the revolution and its repercussions. It also has an intriguing connection to the origins of Madame Tussaud's wax museum. Ali in OR
We've been doing A Tale of Two Cities as a read-aloud for a couple of months now (we only get a few chapters done per week--not as much reading time as we used to have). I'm glad we're doing it, but I must say that it is harder to follow than I thought it would be, especially at the beginning when many threads are being started and you're really not sure who anyone is or what is going on. I think my 7th grader is following it pretty well, but I still find myself doing a lot of synopses--"okay, here's what just happened...". My 10 yo really needs this help to follow what's going on. The beginning (maybe first third of it) was pretty slow and hard to get into, but we're all hooked now.
8filltheheart
Not fiction, but I highly recommend http://www.amazon.com/French-Revolution-Horizon-Caravel-Book/dp/B001PRFTFS

Sebastian (a lady)
The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite books. There are also a number of sequels, most of which are available for the Kindle for free. I have had Tale of Two Cities at my bedside for months and I struggle to get into it.
