why are my sheets shredding?

Dh's pillow case had tears and shreds in it earlier in the week. Dd's pillow case open ends are fraying. And just now as I went to make up my bed after washing sheets, my bottom sheet is shredded. Why? I wash sheets weekly. I just don't understand why they are not holding up longer?

I've had the same problem recently. Only with a certain sheet set (500 thread count from Kohl's) and it happened with both sets of sheets I bought. It is just the fitted sheet on my husband's side of the bed. I have never had a problem with this with any other sheets -- EVER.

Our pillow cases have been getting thin and then shredding, but I have assumed it was because DH uses a CPAP and it might cause extra wear on a pillow case. This seems to happen after a few years of rotation. How old are the things that are shredding for you?

I also think many sheets and other household items are made so cheaply that they are practically disposable these days. :(

This also happened to me. It was bamboo sheets from Target. I originally purchased one set for DS and after a couple of months, liked them enough to get each son two sets. Within a year though the fitted sheet started to shred. The top sheets are fine. I think all in all, manufacturers are using thinner and thinner fabrics. Shirts seem to be the same way now too.

It's true that cotton items are thinner these days.

However, I remember my grandmother and great-aunt mending things like sheets when they would rip. They didn't throw them out unless they were just unusable. They remembered the Depression years too clearly to toss anything away.

Are you bleaching them? That will shred them fast.

I still have Nana's sheets, and I do think they are better quality. But, I also have lots of other sheets. I have thin high count sheets that have shredded and high thick count sheets that are going strong.
