Hedgehogs4
It seems that for Christian hsers there is Apologia General Science and beyond, and...what? I am seeing some reviews of it that cause me some concern. I would like some alternatives to examine. Does anyone do something other than Apologia? boscopup
BJU is also commonly used. It is young earth like Apologia (which I assume is what you mean).
KellyMama
We chose The Rainbow science program rather than General for our 7th gr dd this year. It's been a challenging program for her but seems to cover all the bases.
Stellalarella
You can find PS Harcourt Science texts on amazon for really, really cheap. WIth those, the library, and a liberal dose of hands-on (which is really what kids crave anyway) you can make it work for the younger kids. Here is an example: http://www.amazon.com/Harcourt-School-Publishers-Science-Student/dp/0153174978/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1365131129&sr=8-6&keywords=harcourt+science For my older kids, I have been very glad to use Holt Science and Technology Life Science. Here are some links to threads about the Holt books for middle school http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/457600-fyi-holt-science-math-textbooks-workbooks-pdf/page__view__findpost__p__4870991__hl__%2Bholt+%2Blife+%2Bscience and http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/465986-science-for-mid-schoolhigh-school/page__view__findpost__p__4870277__hl__%2Bholt+%2Blife+%2Bscience
Hedgehogs4
Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out.
Homeschoolmom4981
I ordered Answers in Genesis Science. It looks great, but I'll know for sure when my order arrives. I like that it follows the four year cycle in TWTM and can be used up to 8th grade with varying levels of difficulty in text. Read Cathy Duffy reviews and it looks promising. I will post more when I start using it

Hunter
If you want to use trade books instead of textbooks, you could check out the old first edition TWTM instructions. Grades 7 and 8 use the Eyewitness Books.
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
We have used BJU in the past which is very meaty and hands on experiment wise. This coming year my ds will be using ACE Paces that I am very pleased with from what I have read over so far.
Holly
I'm debating using Apologia's Elementary books until 9th...and then figuring it out then. I keep going back and forth on starting General in 7th.
Stayseeliz
We've used Apolgia and I've been pretty unhappy with them. I think they're a bit dull and not comprehensive enough. With DS going into 6th next year I wanted to find something else. I went to the homeschool bookstore and poured over everything they had with my mom who has been a 2nd-6th grade science, math and LA teacher for 30 plus years. We decided that BJU was hands down the way to go. It's much more comprehensive. I'm excited about it!
Stayseeliz
FWIW I've also talked to someone who said the General Science was literally a total waste of time and I shouldn't use it under any circumstances.
Ann.without.an.e
I have used BJU and Apologia for both elementary and upper grades. I definitely prefer BJU for the elementary years. BJU is also a lot more meaty in the upper grades. I am only using Apologia because it is what Classical Conversations uses.
Hedgehogs4
Thanks for the suggestions. I don't know exactly what we will do yet. We are finishing up the Apologia's Anatomy and Physiology book this year, and we have been extremely happy with it. We have learned so much and done some really fun labs, including dissections (which we did ourselves, not because it was part of the program). Looking at General Science, a huge chunk of it is A&P, and I don't want to do it again so soon. I wonder if I should just go on to Earth science or Physical science. We can cover the history and "what is science" stuff on our own without having to pay the hefty cost of the textbook, etc. Just thinking...Thanks for your replies.
