This is a follow-up to this post.

Thanks to the help here, DH has been doing research on mystery genres, and has concluded -- for now :-) -- that the subgenres he's most interested in are inverted detective stories (howdhecatchem's), locked room mysteries, and (seemingly) paranormal mysteries.

Any recommendations along those line for him? Thanks!

Try the Cree Black mysteries by Daniel Hecht for paranormal-ish. Fun reads. Also, maybe have a gander at Barbara Michaels' novels. They tend toward the paranormal, and though they are perhaps more thriller than mystery novels, they all have a mystery at the center.( This is another pen name of Elizabeth Peters who wrote the Amelia Peabody mysteries.)

Dorothy Sayers' short stories are the kind of how'dhecatchem thing I think you're talking about. And many other "golden age" mysteries have this type of story too.

(How does one become interested in a type of mystery without regard to the author?)

He said that in his case, it's because of his affinity for the TV shows Monk and Columbo, as well as his childhood reading of the Three Investigators series.

Thanks for the suggestions!

He might enjoy Charlaine Harris' paranormal mystery series which starts with

Grave Sight (Harper Connelly Mysteries, Book 1)

"Harper Connelly has what you might call a strange job: she finds dead people. She can sense the final location of a person who's passed, and share their very last moment. The way Harper sees it, she's providing a service to the dead while bringing some closure to the living - but she's used to most people treating her like a blood-sucking leech. Traveling with her step-brother Tolliver as manager and sometime-bodyguard, she's become an expert at getting in, getting paid, and getting out fast. Because for the living it's always urgent - even if the dead can wait forever."

Kareni

Well, I just read something called Sacred Games that I picked up at the library. It's a detective novel about organized crime in India. I don't know if it would fit the bill, but I could hardly put it down. Compared to what I usually read, it was really geared towards men.
