Nan in Mass
University of Nevada? or it might have been Las Vegas? just sent a packet to my son saying that it wasn't too late to apply to college this year, to start classes in the fall, so I thought perhaps I would post here, just in case it is helpful to somebody. Some colleges have ROLLING ADMISSIONS, which means that they accept applications until they fill next year's class. Here are some articles about it: http://www.universitylanguage.com/guides/rolling-admissions/ http://www.petersons.com/college-search/admissions/rolling-admissions-college-requirements.aspx And here is a list of colleges (scroll down past the ad): http://www.petersons.com/college-search/SearchResults.aspx?q=rolling+admissions&c=UG Here is a better list but it might be outdated (2007) so double check: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/354075-list-colleges-early-action-early-decision-rolling-admissions.html You probably should apply soon because some still want to know if you are coming by May 1st and because programs fill up. You can also investigate CONTINUING ED programs. And there are also colleges with OPEN ADMISSIONS, like community colleges. As long as the program isn't full, you pass the placement tests, you can find a way to pay the tuition and fees, and you meet the requirements (usually having to do with age, state residency, and GED or high school diploma), you can take classes. You can take one class or a few classes, or you can apply, matriculate, and be part of a degree program. In our particular community college, if you want to matriculate (major in something and receive a degree/diploma at the end), you need to be part of a dual-enrollment program or have a GED or high school diploma, but you can take classes without those things if you don't matriculate. Just be aware that classes fill up, so you may not be able to get into the particular classes you want if you sign up at the last minute. Nan in Mass
What a great story! My sister was.. ahem... inconsistant?... in high school and we had to scramble to find someplace for her to go. We were very grateful to one of the open enrollment state schools. I used continuing ed for a semester in the process of transfering, since I decided at the lats minute to transfer, far to late to apply in the regular fashion. creekland
Soon there will also be a list of non-rolling admissions school where there are still openings. They put one out every spring. Often there are some decent (not tippy top) schools on the list. Some kids at our school are just getting around to thinking about college apps. It's not "usual," but it isn't incredibly rare either. The main issue we see with late applications come with needing aid. Some schools have auto aid or lower prices so can be ok. Others not so much. Their aid is gone by now. Miss Marple
We got that same University of Nevada packet yesterday, too, along with one from The University of Denver and a couple of others. The University of Denver must have a big mailing budget because we get something from them just about every week :p
Just Another Jen
That is interesting. I think I'll check our state schools websites and see what I can find out.
Nicole M
Interesting. I just heard a story today from our music department admission counselor; she's been working with a homeschool family and asked if she could send my son's application materials to them, with our personal information erased. This family *just* applied last week, and the mom is mean and continually exasperated by every request -- for instance, doesn't want to send the official transcript from the CC because she made her own transcript, send a diploma with a random made up graduation date that doesn't make sense. Our gal is bending over backwards to help this family, because the son is a very talented musician. I guess the point of this story is that if you are going to apply this late, by all means, take the help that is offered!
J-rap
The spring of 2010 turned out to be a year full of upheaval for our family, and one of my daughters had no plans at all. After our lives settled just enough to think about it, she decided in July to apply to a small private university that had a rolling admission. She was accepted in August, given a very nice-sized presidential scholarship plus a "grandmother's scholarship" (since her grandma went there), began school in September, and is still there today. We're so grateful that it was an option!
