poiema
We need a new mattress. It is really uncomfortable. We bought our Cal King 10 years ago with the intention of co-sleeping with our babies. Now that the kids are older I don't think we need so much space. He is convinced that we would regret sizing down. It doesn't help that almost everyone we know owns a Cal King. DH is also convinced that he is too tall for a queen. He's 6 feet. We are both pretty slim and since we both are edge-of-the-bed sleepers our bed is unevenly worn (meaning there is a nice hill in the middle that no one sleeps on, except middle of the night visitors). So...what size bed should we get? Would we regret sizing down to a queen? What do you and your SO have? (RE a recent thread - neither of us snore, toss and turn, or spread out so none of that is a factor).
applethyme
We have a king sized bed and I can't imagine down sizing. I would rather have too much room rather than too little. Plus do you want to have to buy new sheets to fit a new bed?
MomatHWTK
Keeping my king sized as long as I have a room to fit it in!
Sara in AZ
I think it would be great to have a king size bed. However, I will point out that DH, who is 6 feet tall, has spent the last 10 years sleeping just fine in a queen full of babies, toddlers, and an occasional 8 year old. (We do have a sidecar crib situation that helps.) Sounds like a queen for you would just mean a smaller hump in the middle.:- )
poiema
Plus do you want to have to buy new sheets to fit a new bed? We've been talking about getting a new mattress for 2 years and since then the sheets have been wearing out. I haven't replaced any in case we size down. So all I have left is one flannel set for fall/winter and one thin, stretched out set for spring/summer. I would love to buy new sheets! I'm pretty sure we will be getting another Cal King. So far I've only got one vote for a queen, IRL. I'm really surprised that there aren't more queen fans. :confused1:
Khselee
I'm 6' tall, and we have a queen - I fit just fine. Also, DH and I both are on the hefty side, and we still fit even with the occasional 8 year old thrown in for cuddles.
Melissa in Australia
We had just a normal double for years and coslept with no problem. We needed to but a new mattress and upsized to a queen. We bought an organic cotton innerspring and are very happy with it.
Mom in High Heels
I cannot go back down to a queen! James Bond is a mover in his sleep and I don't like to be touched, so anything smaller than a king is out of the question. I love going on holiday, but we almost always have a queen bed and it makes me crazy. I will usually sleep with Indy, who isn't much of a mover, because JB keeps me awake. MomtoCandJ
We have a queen, dh and I are both on the small side. We usually end up with dd in the middle, dog at the foot and cat above our heads. We don't require a lot of space so it works for us. Besides we can't really fit a bigger bed in our room, and once dd sleeps all night in her bed, we would have lots of space. Joker
My dh is 6 ft. and fits just fine in our full size bed. We had a king many years ago and it was just too big for us.
T'smom
We have a queen and we're just fine. We're good with one kid climbing in in the middle of the night, but I'll admit that when they both climb in on the same night, dh gets up and goes to sleep in one of their beds. Dh has been talking about getting a king, but I don't think he's really serious. But we hope to have more kids.....but hopefully at least the oldest will have stopped climbing in by then?!? extendedforecast
We have a king. While it's nice to have space for our two youngest to sleep with us, once they are out of the bed, I would prefer to downsize. Before the little ones were born, I felt like there was an ocean between us at night. I would feel lonely and miss cuddling at night. FWIW, DH is 6 feet and had no trouble sleeping on a queen before we got our king.

Cinder
We have always had a queen. Dh is 6' and I'm 5'10". I tend to sleep on the edge while dh sleeps in the middle of his space. I don't like being touched when I'm sleeping and haven't had any problems with that space-wise. The only issue is dh likes to sleep stretched out on his front so his feet extend all the way to the bottom end of the bed so he prefers the end of the sheet not to be tucked in. I sleep curled up on my side so it's not an issue for me. I can see where your dh might be uncomfortable with tightness around his feet if he sleeps like my dh and might want that extra length/space of a bigger bed. Ottakee
I LOVE my king and hope to stay with that size but I can see where a queen might work just as well for you. How about hoteling it for a night and trying out a queen to see if your dh feels it is too short.
GWOB
We recently upgraded to a king from a queen. Though it's only been 2 months, I could never go back. Never! It really is a lot more room. I'm 5'2 and dh is 5'11. We aren't big people, yet the queen was tight. We hate being touched while sleeping. My vote is king.
ElizabethB
We love our king sized bed! We got it at IKEA, it was cheap for a king and is very comfortable. The slats and different mattress types allow you to choose varying degrees of firmness. It was 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a normal king and we think it is way more comfortable. My husband is 6' and is not as comfortable on a queen bed.
lexi
We have a queen. I love it and will not get a king. I feel lonely in a king :) My hubby is just under 6 feet and he doesn't complain about it being too small.
poiema
I LOVE my king and hope to stay with that size but I can see where a queen might work just as well for you. How about hoteling it for a night and trying out a queen to see if your dh feels it is too short. We recently stayed in a hotel for our anniversary and I told him to get a queen, but they only had kings. We're going bed shopping tonight so we'll try them both out. We had a hand-me-down queen when we first married, but neither of us remember if it was the right fit. I certainly don't remember him complaining about his feet hanging off. All you people saying you don't like to be touched, maybe that's my problem...I want to be touched!! On our king I feel like we are so far away. It's like...hello-o-o-o, anybody there-ere-ere?! But we are both so attached to our edges. We cuddle for a bit but then we go right back to our sides. Maybe we are better off in a king because I stay up and read much later than he does. He wants "absolute darkness" so I have to make a barricade between us so that my reading light doesn't keep him awake. Thanks for helping me think through this. :)
justamouse
Dh and I are both average, and we have a queen. We sleep close to each other/touching. When we turn to the outside edges, we touch feet. We also have a kidlet that sleeps on one side and I normally get the middle. Still, a queen is plenty big for us. As far as the reading goes, it actually is better to sleep in utter darkness so if you read somewhere else and then came to bed?
Punks in Ontario
We have a queen. I love it and will not get a king. I feel lonely in a king :) My hubby is just under 6 feet and he doesn't complain about it being too small. :iagree: I always feel like dh is too far away in a king. And dh is over 6'2". If I'm not mistaken a queen and a king are the same length, just one is wider. An added bonus with the queen is that the 9 and 10 yo can't both easily sleep cuddle with us and don't try to sleep with us. In a king I think they would. Oh, and while you may want new sheets, I use a king size quilt on my queen. I like the fit better.
poiema
If I'm not mistaken a queen and a king are the same length, just one is wider. A king is the same length as a queen, but a cal king is longer. And a cal king is not quite as wide as as a king.

I can't go back to a queen either.... We'll often get two hotel rooms if we aren't getting a condo just so we can have the bigger bed. Especially if it is for more than one night, and we have a lot of driving to do. I don't sleep well in a queen, and everyone likes it if I'm well rested! QueenCat
:hurray: Yay, finally there are some people agreeing with me! I was beginning to give up. You have to do what works for you. You might want to get a hotel room for a night... one with a Queen sized bed. See how it works for you before spending a lot more money on a bed.
