mommyx4
I'd love some suggestions for 6th grade history. I'll have a toddler as well as a newborn then, so I need something that is not teacher intensive. We are more CM types around here so we love read alouds(but not too much reading as I'll be busy too). I want it to still be interesting and fun for the boys, as well as for me. I'd like it to co-inside with geography if possible, but if not that's o.k. I do have A Child's Geography I was thinking of using next year that wouldn't go with history, but I also like the looks of Mapping the World with Art because we LOVE art. But, like I said it doesn't have to be together, but would be nice. Any suggestions?
Another Lynn
This won't sound very cm-ish, but how about Veritas Press' Self-paced history online? Then let them read lots of good books on the side. (VP has a pack of book suggestions to go with it if you want.) It would take a lot off you. If you end up with time to read aloud to them, that's just icing on the cake. HappyGrace
Love love love the VP self-paced! Even my 7th grader is learning a lot from it (the Modern one). I think the Ancient Egypt might be young-ish for 6th grade though, haven't seen Greece/Rome. I learned a ton from the MARR 30 day sample. They have maps, review, timeline, lit suggestions, etc. I can't recommend it highly enough.
mommyx4
Does the VP program have timeline, map activities already with it(like can I purchase a package to put in a notebook) or is that something I need to plan and come up with myself? mommyx4
What about k12 human odyssey? Could we just read something like that? I haven't seen it, but it seems to get rave reviews on these boards. Does it have student pages? I'm not even sure how to use it.
3andme
I have to agree with others. VP's Self Paced History would be great for your situation. It's very independent and engaging and you can add the books as read alouds. VP is having a sale on this product through April 6 - $50 off with code SAVEHIST. The timeline and map activities are incorporated into the online program. K12 Human Odyssey would work as a spine for read aloud. There are student pages but the consensus is they are optional. There is audio available on Learning Ally for the HO books if you don't want to read them aloud. HSBC has discounted memberships avail for Learning Ally. You might also try history notebooking in conjunction with HO. Some other possible options: BJU's online/dvd classes. Grade 6 covers ancient civilizations and features 76 - 30 min vidoes. History at our House - recorded or live daily classes Beautiful Feet books study guides If you're open to doing American History, there are audio books for Joy Hakim's History of US which your dc could listen to without your assistance. Notgrass' America the Beautiful is an open and go program for middle school that incorporates add'l historical fiction.
walkermamaof4
Heart of Dakota is CM and amazingly non-teacher intensive. We just began with it using Preparing this year. I can't believe how much my kids do on their own. Your child could easily do it all on their own. I've actually found myself missing the enormous amount of time we spent last year together using MFW Modern Times. I have to keep reminding myself that building independence in my olders and spending time with my younger is one of my goals. It has geography built in. We aren't using R&S which is what they schedule for grammar. That has not been a problem. My kids all do the next lesson in their grammar (CLE) and we do MCT. They say it is their best year yet. We've loved Draw and Write. And next year in CTC we will be water coloring too. Can't wait!
Miss Marple
Have you looked at the DriveThruHistory program? There is quite a selection of time periods/geographic areas from which to choose. And you can download discussion guides from their website. Very easy for mom and highly entertaining...and my boys loved the programs. It can also be purchased at CBD. http://www.drivethruhistory.com/

Holly
We are really enjoying SCM's history guides. Geography, Bible, and history are included in the guide. We have a short family lesson (usually a chapter of the Bible or a chapter of a read aloud) with a bit of narration. In addition, there may be a picture book or chapter book assignment for the different age groups (I usually read the picture book aloud to all of my DC and the chapter books to my older two, but they can also be assigned as independent reading). It's much lighter than other literature-based history programs...we've even managed to add in some of our own book choices! There are a few suggested activities, but they are really spread out! I think there are only 4 or 5 for the entire year. You could add in more, but I think it's a very nice amount.
