lgliser
Just wondering what a good curriculum would be for basic drawing for 1st graders. Thanks so much!

km123175
Drawing with Children is an excellent resource. It's not an open and go laid out curriculum, but it clearly teaches you to teach children how to draw. I have improved greatly myself since reading the book and practicing the concepts. Lori D.
Just wondering what a good curriculum would be for basic drawing for 1st graders. Thanks so much! For informal drawing instruction that your student can pretty much do solo, we liked: Big Yellow Drawing Book (Dan O'Neill) (ages 4-8) (don't be put off by the "cartoon" look, as it is a great, informal starting point for learning the basics of perspective, shadows, etc.) 1-2-3 Draw series (Freddie Levin) (ages 5+) Draw Squad (Mark Kistler) (ages 7+) (again, don't be put off by the "cartoon" look, as he quickly, easily gets you understanding how to incorporate the basics of drawing: foreshortening, surface, shading, shadow, density, contour, overlapping, and size; Kistler was trained by Dan O'Neill!) Tranquility7
DS and I have learned SO much from Mark Kistler. The drawings are cartoonish, and yet he teaches a lot of solid art concepts along the way, and DS has generalized what he has learned far more than I ever expected. You can get a great discount for the online drawing lessons through the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op. Btw, Kistler also offers some other programs through the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op (virtual classroom, for instance), but we have loved the online drawing lessons and highly recommend them. We have not seen the virtual classroom lessons.

My kids love the online drawing lessons and they're well-worth the money if you get them through HBC, but for a 1st grader, I'd recommend using the sample lessons before deciding to pay for a membership. Aspasia
Is the HSBC deal on Mark Kistler's lessons an ongoing deal? I don't see an expiration date, but sometimes I'm just not looking in the right place.

I bought a 3 year subscription through HBC a couple of years ago, which it doesn't appear they offer anymore, but they do always seem to have some Mark Kistler offering.
