Xuzi Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 DH and I are finally thinking of diving into the world of texting (we only got our first cell phones in 2006, so we're always dragging behind). Which type of keyboard do you prefer for texting? A lot of the phones DH is looking at that he likes are phones like the new Windows phone and the iPhone which don't have qwerty boards. Are digital keyboards easy to text with? I guess I worry about thinking I'm pressing one letter but the touch screen thinks it's the one next to it. Will I be driven nuts by the digital keyboard, or will it work as well as the qwerty? (and do qwerty's have their own issues?) Thanks! :) Quote
RebeccaS Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 DH "upgraded" my phone about a year ago from the actual keyboard to the touch screen. He's so sweet. I'm getting better at typing on it, but I'm forever hitting the letter beside the letter I want and when I'm trying to type fast for some reason, it makes me want to smash my phone into itty bitty tiny bits. Then, I realize that's way too strong of a reaction for a piece of technology. So, I sigh, I huff, and I backspace to hit the proper letter. :p Quote
milovany Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 QWERTY definitely. Anything else will drive you nuts. I didn't think I'd get used to a touch screen, but it's not hard. On my phone, I don't have to type exact; the phone will throw out there what it thinks the word should have been. If I type "satirday" it will still give me Saturday, for example. Or at the very least, give me 4-5 options to click instead of retyping the whole word. Quote
Hypatia. Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I changed from a phone with a qwerty keyboard to an iPhone. The qwerty keyboard was more difficult for me because the keys were so flippin' tiny that I just had to use the tips of my nails to type and was still always hitting the wrong key. I occasionally hit the wrong key on my iPhone, mainly the delete when I'm going for the L or M, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Quote

I didn't realize there was something other than a qwerty on iPhones (I was thinking of the old keyboards that match the phone dialing pad numbers). So take my advice with that in mind. I type for a living, so I really prefer a qwerty for all my typing. Quote
nmoira Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I use a swipe-style keyboard on my Android phone called SwiftKey (swipe/flow is optional, and even when enabled you can still peck). It's accuracy and predictive text capabilities are first rate - sometimes it seems as if my keyboard knows me better than does anyone else. Quote
4kidlets4me Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I have an iPhone and don't have much trouble with it. But sometimes auto correct will take a word and just randomly replace it with a word that makes no sense in the sentence. There is a reason the website D@mn You Auto Correct exists. Quote

But not always. :blushing: I find that I dictate many of my texts. It is just faster. Quote
Hypatia. Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Forgive me! I didn't realize there was something other than a qwerty on iPhones (I was thinking of the old keyboards that match the phone dealing pad numbers). Oops! When I said qwerty keyboard on my old phone, I was talking about a phone with a little physical slide-out keyboard. The touch keyboard on my iPhone is qwerty also. Sorry for the confusion, blame it on lack of sleep here! :o Quote
Xuzi Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 Boy, I sure am showing how new I am to this! The qwerty's I'm talking about are the slide-out keypads. :p Quote
KatieJ Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Just got an Iphone after having a flip phone for decades. I have done very little texting in the past. I am surprised at how fast I am getting used to the touch pad. DH has a Droid phone and texting on it made me nuts as I was always hitting the wrong key as in the one next to the one I wanted. I blamed it on fat fingers. I am not having that issue with the Iphone. Now I can blame it on the Droid. There is a swipe ap, but I haven't downloaded it yet. I am still kind of afraid to touch the thing! Quote
Hypatia. Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I rarely texted before I got my iPhone, even with my little phone with the slide-out qwerty keyboard. Now I text like a teenager, keeping in touch with my friends who are no longer in the same area (group message). I've gotten very proficient with the touch screen keyboard. Whenever my phone is on the counter and starts making noise, DH says "you're friends are talking again". :blushing: Quote
Lizzie in Ma Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I thought I'd miss my physical keyboard when I went from my old G1 to a Samsung. With Swype though, plus the speech to text, I don't miss it at all. Quote
KungFuPanda Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 The touch screen my drive you nuts for a bit, but it gets 'trained' to your touch and will soon become easy. Quote
