Can someone explain Roku, or other thingies to me?

Yeah, I said "thingies." Let this be fair warning as to my ignorance about all of this.

My husband and I watch Netflix in the evenings at time. We watch it by hovering over my 2009 laptop. Enough!

What should I get, that won't cost me an arm and a leg, that I can use to just watch my Netflix stuff on our actual TV set?

If I get a Roku box, or whatever, do I have to turn on my computer and hook up the Roku to my computer and to my TV at the same time? I'm worried my laptop will expire from the strain.

Should I just stand on my television set with an aluminum hat on my head and pray for digital signals or something?

Thanks for any help! :)

I've been wondering about this too, and know nothing about it.

Can I still be on the internet while using a roku? Does it need it's own modem?

What kind of shows can you get? Right now we have the free digital channels, and are pretty happy with that. Mostly I watch PBS.

I think it acts like a wireless card for the tv. So as long as you have enough data (unlimited) to have several internet devices (tablets, phones, laptops, etc.) at the same time you should be fine. We usually have several wireless devices on at anytime along with the Roku.

We mostly stream Netflix and occasionally Amazon -- we have prime so we get free streaming. Sometimes, I'll buy/rent a movie from Amazon as a special treat.

I think you can look to see what Neflix has on it without subscribing.

not sure if anyone has already answered so I'll give my few cents worth....we have APPLE TV-I think the little box thingie that hooks up to the tv cost about $99.....When I use it (rarely),I just watch netflix.....not sure what else is available on it-I have to get a new HDMI cord to hook it up again......

You will need a computer to enter a few codes to activate your channels. It is not a big deal. Once they are activated and you set up your network on your ROKU you are done. There is a channel store with some other channels but mostly we use netflix, amazon, and hulu plus. I love love love our roku! We even got rid of cable because we weren't using it anymore! I promise that it is easy easy easy to set up and use.
