I am looking for high school science suggestions other than Apologia. I know it's a good program, I own most of the high school courses. However, I have a middle school student who wants to major in Marine Biology. She loves all things science and we enjoyed the Apologia elementary books. She found Wile's style in General Science boring and wordy. I don't want to ruin her love of science. She is currently using Rainbow in 7th grade-completing the program in one year. It's a little simple for her at times, but she enjoys the humor in it. I want her well prepared for college science and don't need the Apologia worldview and would actually like for her to understand other views. Any suggestions?

For the basic sciences, we have used introductory college texts for non-majors

Knight College Physics for algebra based physics,

Chang General Chemistry for chem

Campbell Concepts and Connections for bio

Is she a strong math student? Are you looking for her to take honours science courses in high school? She'll need to have a solid Alg 1 under her belt before she tackles Chem or Physics.

I'm the mom with the high school biology (and chem and physics) curricula online. I'm glad to answer any questions about any of them.

I'll be teaching biology next fall, so I'll either be updating my original syllabus or reworking it, depending on the needs of the group of four and the quite tasty new lab book I picked up.

Apologia was not a good fit for us in high school either. So, I had to regroup and look at other options. This is what we used:

Abeka Phyiscal Science

Science Shepherd Biology

BJU Chemistry

Hewett's Conceptual Physics

Marine Biology by Peter Castro

I like the look of BJU Biology but it was just too rigorous for oldest dd. Youngest might use it though...

Thank you for your suggestions. She is a strong math student. Next year is technically her 8th grade year, but I was hoping to do a high school science while she is doing Algebra 1. We are hoping she is nearly done with core classes by her 11th grade year so she can do some type of internship her senior year, as well as additional science. She seems ready for heavier coursework and truly loves science. I thought Biology might be a good start and then Chemistry. Thoughts? I will look into the suggestions here, also. Thanks again!

I wouldn't do Chem in the same year that she's doing Alg 1 - I would wait until the Algebra is solidly in place before taking on Chem. In your case, then, I think you're right - Bio and then Chem after she's nailed down Alg 1. :)
