bnwhitaker
Does anyone know of a good study of birds? My sons are 8 & 9.
Mama2two
We loved reading the Thorton Burgess bird book and then looking up information about the birds. Another thing to do is participate the Great Backyard Bird Count. Get a good field guide and learn all the birds in your bakyard, the next one isn't until February though. Memoria Press also had a bird curriculum for science for 5th grade. Although your kids are younger it may be worth taking a look at.

2_girls_mommy
We did the Memoria Press one and the Apologia Zoo 1 this year. I liked the MP one for my 10 yr old, and I just did the questions orally w/my 8 yr old. I did get her the field guide color book and I had her do some of the looking up of the bird stuff. Then I had her narrate and create a notebook instead of the workbook. DD10 did the workbook. The Apologia zoo w/notebook was a better fit for the dd8. Co-op was doing it this year, so she jointed after we had already done the MP one, and learned even more. We did the Christmas Bird Count w/our local Audobon society and that was awesome. ScoutTN
The Cornell Ornithology program has a great website and lots of free helps. We had fun with the packet on crows and ravens this winter. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search.aspx

plansrme
Do you have feeders you can see from your school room? We put these in a couple of months ago, and my 9 yo has become a crazy bird guy. He keeps binoculars (to see the birds that are 20 feet away) and a bird field guide on his desk. He loves stocking the feeders and identifying the visitors. The people at our local Wild Birds Unlimited have been a huge help and are very patient with him when we stop in to refresh our supply of pig--I mean bird--food.
