mommymilkies Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 A big admission here: reading about hauntings and alternative history is my escapism. But whilst I wait for my next season of Supernatural to air on Netflix, I need something to entertain me. We don't need to get into the fact/fiction part of supernatural topics. Yes, I get it. Yes, I was in fact, a scientist. It's just my own version of reading the tabloids. ;) I love Graham Hancock, but I'm kind of read most of them...too many times. I'd like to avoid the whole UFO thing. Too overly dramatized for my liking. I don't like drama, just the facts or stories. I've been reading the Smithsonian blog which has had some fascinating unsolved cases lately. I have a fun book on Haunted Illinois that has neat stories of haunted houses and unsolved mysteries. So stuff along those lines. Nonfiction. Please don't recommend Ancient Aliens. That dude's hair makes me crack up and it's just so dang preposterous. Even Bigfoot would laugh at it. And I've seen X-Files about a bazillion times. AND PLEASE NO ROMANCE NOVELS. Paranormal romance is about the only thing I can find. I like Sookie Stackhouse, but that's as far as I'm going into that genre. I'd really like book ideas, but I'll take shows, too. Especially those on Amazon Prime free or Netflix. :) Quote
applethyme Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 DD Barant, Jim Butcher and Illona Andrews are some of my favorite authors. Great stories and characters. Quote
vettechmomof2 Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Kim Harrison and Patricia Briggs are also good. Def. Jim Butcher! Quote
Wheres Toto Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 How about the Weird <<state>> books? There's one for just about every state and a few others. There's also a few books based on/spin-off from the tv show: Supernatural: Bobby Singers Guide to Hunting The Essential Supernatural The "Supernatural" book of spirits, monsters, demons... Quote
mlbuchina Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 You might like the show Fringe. There are several seasons of it streaming free for Amazon Prime members. Have you looked into something like this? Not sure what state you are in, but there could be books like that for your state. Quote
Audrey Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I love, love, love Simon R. Green's books! His Nightside series of books are great, intertwining supernatual and seemingly random mythologies in an alter-verse set beneath modern day London. He also has a series called Secret History, whose main character is Edwin Drood (not that Edwin Drood, but I love the nod to the classics there). It revolves around a powerful family, the Droods, and the fact that they're pretty much the only thing keeping the modern world from being overrun by supernaturals and aliens. All of the titles in this series are plays on James Bond books & films. His older series, Deathstalker, are more SF/Fantasy, but loads of supernatural thrown in, too. They're a good old fashioned space opera romp -- a bit of a slog to get through as they're all quite long, but they're very addictive. I love his books and recommend them frequently to people who are into such a genre. It is rare that someone doesn't like them at least a bit, and they usually end up devouring anything of his they can get their hands on later. Warning ahead: they can be a bit gorey at times and they employ some definitely disturbing imagery. However, they are no more gorey than your average killer-thriller novel, IMO. Quote
Audrey Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Jim Butcher is great, as I see mentioned already. Some other authors to consider: Kim Harrison - The Hollows series. All the titles are plays on Clint Eastwood movies. Revolves around a witch and her pals, a vampire and a fairie. Kelley Armstrong - Women of the Otherworld series. Various novels each featuring a specific supernatural -- some are werewolves, some witches, some half-demons, one is a very cool necromancer. All the characters kind of know each other, but the novels are decent stand-alones. Laurell K. Hamilton - The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. This might cross into the romance category somewhat, but it isn't the main gist of the series and besides, what LKH calls "romance" is definitely not your average bodice-ripper stuff. If you like mysteries, there are quite a few cozy mystery series out there that deal with supernaturals. Ones I'd recommend: Madelyn Alt - Bewitching Mystery series (witches & witchcraft) Shirley Damsgaard - Ophelia & Abby Mystery series (witches & witchcraft) Casey Daniels - Pepper Martin series (psychic/medium) Paul Magrs - Brenda & Effie mystery series (classic monsters + supernatural) Victoria Laurie - Ghost Hunter Mystery series (name says it all) Quote

Thanks, I almost forgot Simon R. Green and I am reading his bride book right now! Def. an interesting take on the world! Quote
Wheres Toto Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 For fiction, there's F. Paul Wilson's Secret History of the World/Repairman Jack series. Quote
Giraffe Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Ultraviolet? It was a British miniseries about vampires, but I'm not sure they ever use that word the whole of the show. Really cool. ETA: available on Netflix last I checked. Quote
