genny Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I'm on a low budget and am wondering if I can use the teacher's manual without getting a student book. I cannot see samples of the student book online! Is it just a book full of the sentences??? Also on the topic of MCT...I'm interested in the grammar, practice and writing. Has anyone used the literature 'mud' or others? Did your child enjoy reading them? One last question, is mct available only on their website? TIA Quote
Five More Minutes Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 If you don't mind copying out the sentences and lines for analysis from the teacher's manual, then you could just get the TM for Practice Island. As far as I know, MCT can only be purchased from Royal Fireworks Press. Quote
Chrysalis Academy Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Yes, it's just a book full of sentences. You can write them out or type them out for your dc and not buy the book. I got my packages on eBay for about half price. You don't say how old your dc are, but the Mud trilogy would be great to do, after finishing the Island level. Sentence Island introduces the characters. It's a great first "deeper" reading with vocabulary and guided discussion. I got them for my 5th grader for Christmas, and they were below her level (in that she read them very quickly), but she loved them and we had good discussions about them. With my second dd I will introduce them earlier, right after finishing Sentence Island. Quote
zoo_keeper Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 We only bought the PI TM and did the sentences aloud without a problem. Regarding the Mud trilogy, my girls looooooved them. Begged for them. Were teary-eyed when they were done and are keeping their fingers crossed that more Mud adventures are in the future. But definitely do SI first. And yes, I've only heard of the ability to purchase MCT directly through RFP or at a conference. Quote
km123175 Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Zoo_Keeper - do they give discounts at the conference? I'd like to pick it up at a conference and not pay shipping. Thanks, Quote
Forgiven Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 We don't write in our practice island book. I have my kids copy the sentences in a notebook (I copy it for my DS--2nd grade--as his writing needs a lot of work. Otherwise, he'd have one sentence take up two, or maybe three lines in the notebook). LOL Anyway, we copy and write everything in the notebook. Now I can use the same practice island for my youngest when he's up for MCT. :) Quote

Thanks, Unfortunately, MCT or RFP haven't been at any conference I have attended so I don't know. The two tiers of pricing listed on their website does make me wonder if buying in person you pay the higher (i.e., the non-online) price but don't pay shipping. If you're interested and in the area, I believe they're going to have another conference soon. Quote
