Seeking travel advice: Montreal or NY and Boston?

The hive was such a HUGE help in planning our London vacation last year (thank you for that!), that I wanted to ask your help again in planning our trip for this fall.

This time, due to financial constraints, we're staying on the North American continent. So we were originally thinking Montreal, for a little French "flavor" closer to home. But I found a really good air fare to New York, so we started thinking about a combined NY/Boston trip (ride the Acela).

Our daughter (13) has never been to any of these cities. Husband has been to all three. I've only been to New York, but I'd be happy to go back. Husband thinks that we'll find a lot more to do in NY/Boston than in Montreal.

Daughter's favorite things about our London trip were: visiting the National Gallery, and shopping on Oxford and Regent Streets. And when I asked her what she most wants to do on vacation, she said shopping and museums! So if those were your main interests, would you do Montreal or NY/Boston?

Daughter really wanted to go to Paris while we were in London, but we decided against it for logistical and financial reasons (we'll do it as a separate trip in another year or two). Do you really get a lot of French culture in Montreal? Do you think a girl who is interested in France would have a lot more fun in Montreal than NY/Boston?

Thanks for any advice!

The good news is, you can't go wrong. :-)

I don't think Montreal feels overly French, but it's been quite a while since I've spent time there. Usually we just head to the airport for a flight to France. If you want French, I'd go to Quebec City.

You can certainly get your fill of shopping and museums in either Boston or New York. Combine them and . . . wow.

MONTREAL ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Possibly the finest vacation I ever had! DH spoke at an international conference, and I went all over everywhere with a friend who has lived there all of her life.

French language and culture are ubiquitous. The Botanical Gardens are extraordinarily beautiful. The restaurants are endless and the food is superb. Museums -- check! Goodness, I could go on forever about how wonderful it was.

I LOVE MONTREAL!!! So many museums and great food too. The archaeology museum is incredible.... especially the basement. We get a special pass that is good for a week, and includes many attractions as well as the subway system. Wish I could remember what it is called.... Dh always goes for work while we play!

Well then, New York and Boston are beautiful in September. lol These are all good choices but Montreal would be more romantic. You are also close enough to Quebec City and Ottawa so you couldn't possible run out of things to do. If so call me, I'll come running but this side of the border is not so interesting.
