1bassoon
Hard to believe my son is heading into his senior year. . . . He's looking at a STEM major. This year, took Pre-Calc with TPS (Karen Nelson is an EXCELLENT teacher. Highly recommend) So, I'm looking at next year. TPS has Calculus (AB/BC) + AP. Whew! Cost is $666. Pros that I see? Live class with a teacher. Ds really enjoyed that this year. Text used is Prentice Hall's Calculus 4th ed. Derek Owens, AP Calculus AB. Less expensive - $58/month, so if he takes 10 months it's $580. Text is Calculus by Foerster, which is apparently oop so Mr. Owens makes his own materials available based on that text. The local CC isn't an option for us; heard quite a few horror stories there. We also have the option of a local tutorial using Saxon Calculus; I have mixed feelings about that and would likely drive ds there 2x/ week (REALLY not liking that option, but we don't have the $$ for him to get a license/car) I'm not sure it's necessary for ds to take AB/BC Calc - I'm pretty sure as a STEM major, he'll have to take his uni's calculus anyways. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks!

Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks! I can't help with the choices. Taking Calc during high school, even if you are certain you won't use the college credit from AP/DE, is a good idea for a few reasons-----it shows that the student took a challenging math course and it might allow the student to have a s.ight.y easier time during first semester college Calc. NancyNellen
Hi there, friend! I have absolutely no experience with TPS, but have been using Derek Owens with the three oldest and ADORE it. The teaching is thorough, he quickly answers questions, grading is done in a timely way. Although we are not to the Calculus level, we have used PreAlgebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and N is about to being AlgII. I REALLY like that they can work at their own pace through the material, speeding up and slowing down as necessary. N completed the Geometry course in 8 months, so there is potential for being less costly. Miss you!
