JFSinIL
OK, I let Ancestry.com lure me in with a two-week free trial. Now someone tells me to use LegacyFamilyTree instead. I am confused. Which is better or are they the same? I downloaded a free Legacy version and uploaded the Gencom from Ancestry and Legacy now tells me I am my own husband, and that I can't correct it since I have another marriage. Oh, and my hubby is now my female wife. Maybe Ancestry.com is better????? At least they aren't giving me unwanted sex-changes ;-) or extra spouses I have never met! gardenmom5
they are not the same. you can have legacy on your computer, and it will talk to ancestry, and can download from/upload to ancestry at your command. it will also download/upload research notes/documentation. (I'm obsessive about documentation. if you don't have documentation, you have nothing but a story.) ancestry is more about research, but your tree is stored in their database online, and you can only access it if you have a membership. you can delete the tree in legacy, and start over so you make sure to have the trees coordinated with who is the prime person in each tree. and get your dh back to being your dh. ;p

gaillardia
I was really irritated with ancestry.com after having used it at the library and my church's family history center. One of my friends at church had logged on to her own ancestry account at the fh center because she said her account is a better account and you get more information. If you get your own account they don't withhold information. I think it's messed up. I found on ancestry that my great aunts who were sisters to my grandmother are listed as her cousins. I knew these women! Stepping down now. :glare:

Stepping down now. :glare: as any linked pedigree/family group chart - the quality of the chart is only as good as the person putting it together and submitting the chart. even pedigree charts submitted to the church's site can have major problems. ancestry does have a feature so you can contact the owner of the pedigree chart and request a correction, and you can make your own correct version. there is an expectation that people will use documentation and care when putting charts together - the reality is, that's tedious and some are get so eager to put together a chart they aren't as careful as they should be. (ever noticed how many people proclaim from the rooftops how they're descended from royalty? show me the verified documentation.) I've also traced people who it became obvious were lying on various documents and it took some real sleuthing to figure things out. and there are step-parents listed as parents and only by doing research and finding the original documents does that come out. and much younger siblings listed as a child . . . . and on and on it goes. (But can't do emoticons on iPad) It's been awhile since I've dome much genealogy, but, if I remember, Legacy is for Windows???? I have Renunion for Mac -- sounds similar.
