soonermomma
My daughters will be in 3rd and 5th grade in the fall. I'm trying to figure out what we are going to do for their reading next school year. Neither of them like to read for fun, and I have a hard time getting them to read anything that challanges them. Is there an actual reading curriculum besides Rod and Staff that has a reader that they do their daily reading out of with the option of workbooks that ask questions about what they read? This year we tried just checking out library books, and not having any curriculum or reader to follow and it just didn't work out great. Any suggestions are welcome! I love to read, and I hope they will eventually love to read. ``
edeemarie
BJU has readers with workbooks, as does CLE. Pathway Readers also have workbooks you can use along with them. If you would rather they read "regular" books you could look into something like Progeny Press guides that go into more than just answering questions about the story. LBoogie
The two we are using are the Amish Pathway Readers and the Christian Liberty Nature Readers. My daughter sounds like yours, when it comes to reading. Just not interested. I have found that using both of these readers has helped tremendously. It is a get 'er done approach, but she doesn't hate it. We just read from them everyday. I am praying that she eventually turns into a "reader" but for now, this approach seems to be working for her. mrshomework
I'm doing the Pathway Readers for 3rd this year. My dd really likes them and they are also very affordable. The workbooks are okay but some chapters don't include too much on comprehension it's more like vocabulary and fill in the blank with vocabulary words and phonics review. If you are wanting more comprehension questions where they have to fill out complete sentence you may consider something else. We do grammar everday and spelling everday and sometime the workbook does not get done but the stories are short enough that we do read them every day. I am in search of a program for next year with more comprehension questions. But I am considering buying the Pathway Readers for extra reading. Roadrunner
I got k12 lit for my DS. Stories are lovely! You can get student/teacher manuals as well, but if you are using it for reading only, you can do without. i plan on applying WTM techniques (summaries, copywork, vocab cards, etc) to these readers (in addition to WWE, not as a substitute). I would highly recommend these books. http://www.christianbook.com/classics-for-young-readers-kit/pd/728543?event=CPOF
