I want a Sonlight style curriculum that is for SOTW/MOH that arrives with everything in one box. Does that exist?

I tried Biblioplan this year, but I'd really like something that is pre-packaged. I spent 3 hours this morning trying to locate books from Biblioplan, SOTW activity guide and MOH. I have been doing that every 6 weeks. Many of the books are out of print, so I have to track them down or try and figure out a substitute. The thing I loved about Sonlight is the wonderful IG that and that everything you need for the year was all in one box. I do want to use both SOTW and MOH as spines then add the literature.

There are plans in the MOH yahoo group to coordinate with Sonlight cores so you could go that way. I am sure SOTW has something too but I am just more familiar with MOH since that is what we use.

The other thing we are doing is adding in Yesterday's Classics ePub books to MOH. They are already all downloaded to the iPad and we just read the books that go best with what we are currently studying. At least this would save you from having to collect as many books.

I make no attempt to collect all the books for use with SOTW. I just look one week ahead and when I'm at the library, I pick up whatever books they have on that topic (for non-fiction) or whatever version they have for literature suggestions. We read them, narrate them and then return them. I don't miss the IG, in that I disliked being told what pages to read per day or specifically which books to read. This has worked well for us. Now if you don't have access to a good library, or if your library habits are not well-organized, it could be problematic.

This has always worked for us too. Some weeks we have tons of books to wade through, and I pick one or two that look the best of the ones that are basically the same thing. Then I put the rest in a basket for kids to wade through when they want something to read. I assign some for personal reading. Often these take more than one week. But I don't care that dd8 is still reading a book about Alexander the Great, even though we have moved on to the Americas this week. It doesn't confuse her. Other weeks we only have 3-4 from the library at all, and we read them all. Some weeks we are busy and don;t make it to the library at all, and we call SOTW good enough for that topic. I do collect books from the next year's time period from used books sales too over a year, so I usually have a box to pull a few things from of our own. But I do very little prep except thumbing through the books when they come in from reserve at the library.

Have you looked at Winter Promise? They don't use SOTW, but some of their themed history sets use MoH. I originally purchased SOTW for this year for ancients. I then went to Winter Promise's website to see what they use for ancients, and they use MOH. I then took a look at the books they use in their ancient history set and made my list that way. I didn't purchase through Winter Promise, but they do have an IG that lays everything out, if that is what you're looking for. You can also just purchase the IG and then get the other books from the library. They don't use MoH for all their history sets, though.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Honestly, tho, 3 hours seems like a reasonable amt of time to spend planning 6 weeks worth of work, esp if it's not really planning but simply pulling books.

Could it be that it's in the middle of your school year? I found it much easier to plan in the summer, when I wasn't quite as busy. I made a list of books, then looked thru the library system to see what I'd be able to get there, and what I might want to buy. I actually coordinated 4 "sources" at a time--books from Sonlight, WTM, VP and TOG.

Anyway, just throwing that out there. I do get it's frustrating to deal with OOP books. Finding that out at the beginning of the year is easier, tho.

I'm using Biblioplan next year. I probably spent 3 hours TOTAL mapping out next year, including what books I want to read with the kids (we're not doing them all, it's just too much). As I plan my year (week by week), I look up the books in my library database and at amazon to see what is available. If it's hard to get, I don't put it on the schedule. That way when I go to get books during the year I know which ones the library has and which ones I'll need to purchase and it doesn't take long to do so (maybe 10 minutes every month or so, I just get a months worth at at ime). Maybe planning that way would help with whatever curriculum you use?

Unfortunately, my very large library system does not have the books that Biblioplan suggests. I've only been able to get 3 books there all year. The rest I get from Amazon or Ebay if I can find them.

I haven't looked at WP in a long time, thanks!

The WP Quest for the Middle Ages is perfect. I can add SOTW easily. I will order the guide from them and all the books elsewhere.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Illuminations--that's the curriculum put out by Bright Ideas Press, the publisher of MOH. They have put together packages with an IG for 3rd-8th grades and for high school.

I've used some of their selections but haven't ever purchased from them--I can't give up my Sonlight! But I've found it pretty easy to use SL and MOH together, and have blogged on that here. I pick all my books out for the year ahead of time and order in May usually (though I may order from 2-3 places instead of just 1).

HTH some! Merry :-)

Essentially, yes. If they have the suggested books, I'll grab those, but I don't sweat it. I've come across some gems this way, that I would have otherwise have missed. Lots of twaddle, too, or books that are not age-appropriate, but those are easy to filter out after a 30-second perusal and I just leave them on the shelf.
