ksr5377
I'm looking at K & 1st for next year. Are they basically crafts? Are they scheduled weekly? Daily? Do you think they're worth the time involved? My children would like school to have more "crafts" so I'm trying to be open to this. I don't mind what essentially amounts to a busy work that they'll enjoy, but I don't think I want one daily.

Heatherwith4
We are doing K this year. They are not daily, but a couple each unit. We aren't terribly crafty, so we don't do all of them.
Donna A.
A lot of the hands-on in K is related to science and nature study. Some Bible, but that's interconnected with the science, too, theme-wise. (God's creation) In 1st grade, you have nature study/walks again, science experiments, cooking activities, dress-up ideas, and a very light introduction to mapwork. There are some cut-and-craft type ideas for reviewing phonics rules along the way, as well. You can literally pick and choose as you go. We've never done *everything* listed, no matter what year it was.
ksr5377
Great, thank you for the replies. I was hoping some of the activities were actually educational in 1st, and it sounds like they are!
Mom2TheTeam
PP gave a great description for 1st. So, I'll just say, "yeah that." The activities in K are some crafts and some other. Examples would be collecting leaves (or rocks) and sorting them or going into a dark room and shining a flashlight on the mirror to see how it reflects to show how the moon reflects the sun, measuring the distance of something or locating something on a map. There is cooking....making applesauce or whatever. Some are crafts. Most of the crafts are fairly simple. I'm not craft at all and I've been okay. You definitely don't have to do them all. We definitely pick and choose based on what seems easy or fun or what I feel like doing. LOL. I have 6 kids 7 and under. I can't get to it all. ;) I did more of the activities in K than I have done in 1st. My kids still really enjoy 1st. Not doing as many hasn't caused any issues for us.
