AimeeM
I don't want to buy the full K-3 manipulative kit since I'm not sure that the curriculum will be a fit for my son (through third grade, lol). What manipulatives were necessary for the K math curriculum?
Mommy22alyns
I seriously cannot remember. It must not have been anything special at all. I had a stockpile of various manipulatives from Saxon (fail). I think I bought flashcards with colors and shapes on them - you could make them too. It looks like RR has just the K manipulative kit too. http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/Horizons+Grade+K+Manipulative+Kit/HZNKMK/e86b0e966b3113cc60d835c9?subject=10&category=8282
PentecostalMom
Disclaimer: I just began using Horizons 2 this past week. That being said, I asked this question here and on another forum. The answer was nearly the same. Either people used stuff they already had, or were able to cheaply pick up whatever they needed without buying that whole kit. My suggestion is to order the materials (books), if you haven't already, and go through the first few lessons (maybe 10 or so) and see what you *think* you would actually use. Some of it you will never use (says that mom that bought the entire manipulatives kit for Saxon K-3 and never used one.single.piece of it) and some you will be able to substitute things around the house. In the Horizons 2 Manual there is a manipulatives scheudule so you can see which ones are used in which lesson. That has been a great help to me already. Tanikit
For Horizons K with my DD I used a set of counters (any set of counters or even things lying around the house will do) and a clock that I could manipulate myself. My DD already knew shapes and colors so didn't need anything for that. I think that is all we used.
Tracy
When I used Horizons K about 3 years ago, there were absolutely no manipulatives called for by the program. I have seen lists of manipulatives that would be needed, but I don't know how they were supposed to be used since they were not referenced in the TM. It was one of the reasons we stopped using it. I was a new homeschooler, and I couldn't figure out how to make it more than a workbook.
