fourcatmom
Every year I look at MCT and every year I think we should try it. Last year I ended up buying IEW and my 6th grader was bored to tears with the middle grade level B book. I have used some of it with my 5th grader. As I am planning my curriculum for next year, I am again looking at MCT. Both girls have always scored advanced on their LA portions of state testing, so I think they can handle a challenging LA program. Is it too late to jump in now? And, if not what level do you start at? It seems like this is a program that the child benefits from early exposure.
Abeilles
I can't speak from personal experience but my friend who is starting to HS next year picked up MCT level 4 for her rising 6th grader after speaking with the RFP booth rep at our HS convention. Level 4 seems to be the into year to the next phase of MCT which is essay writing. I attended his essay writing class at my convention and it just makes sense! He really wants to prepare students for college writing and simplifies the process. I appreciated his approach. We will be starting MCT island for 3rd grade! 8filltheheart
Our first and only yr using MCT was when my 6th grade dd used the Voyages level and 2 older students used AAW. For my 6th grader, she was more than prepared for what Voyage level contained and she was not challenged with the exception of the content of the poetry bk. AAW was significantly below my older kids. I am not a MCT fan, but I won't bore you with the whys. ;) Just wanted to share that if a student is well-educated in writing/grammar, then just purchase the appropriate MCT level and there shouldn't be any difficulties.
