It is illegal to block the rear view window in a car in CA, NV, OR, ID?

I'd rather not use the car top carrier if I can get away with it but that would mean blocking the rear window in my hatch back. I do have side mirrors which some laws mention but I've never seen a car that doesn't so why the law?

My CHP DH says that as long as you have both side mirrors and can see 200 feet behind you, you are good.

Not illegal. Consider campers, etc: they can't see out the back window. It's legal as long as your side mirrors are clear. If you're worried, you can get a side view mirror extension, too, to be able to see more.

I know in CA you are only required to have 2 rear view mirrors unblocked, it doesn't matter which two.

A car top carrier will make noise and increase fuel consumption. I remember having my station wagon loaded, so there was no way the rear view mirror inside the car gave me a view toward the rear. However, with the 2 side mirrors, you have NO view of anything behind your car, so do not back up!
