Has anyone used Marie's Words for vocabulary?

DD is a dyslexic visual learner.

I'm torn between trying MCT's Caesar's English with her again (last year it was just too much for her) or Marie's Words (which are supposed to appeal to visual learners.

My hesitation with a standard "word for word" program like Marie's is that it will only help in so much as she can memorize each word and definition; whereas Caesar's English, with its emphasis on roots and *how* to make words, could help her decode and understand language even if she doesn't immediately recognize the word.

I'm familiar with both, but haven't used either, so take this with a grain of salt. I think MCT is more of a whole curriculum and Marie's words is more suited as a supplement. I am planning on looking at both of these items at the Cincinnati homeschool conference in a couple weeks as I'm interested in using both of them. Perhaps use them together. MCT for the why and how. Marie's words just for vocab building?

We do just that; use them together. My ds has really retained the vocabulary in Marie's Words because of the pictures. Caesar's English is good for roots. I like approaching it from both angles.

It isn't too much for your son to do two vocab programs? I'm just afraid it would overwhelm dd.

I keep Marie's Words very simple. A few times a week, I pull the next 5 cards. We try to guess the definition, then review them several times. Then, I put them on a ring (they're pre-drilled!) and we review all the ones on the ring. Granted, we don't have all of them on the ring, so it will probably take more and more time to review as it gets filled up, but that's OK. You can't beat repetition.
