Guest inoubliable
The medications that I'm on are causing some dry mouth. It wasn't terribly bad until today. No matter how much water I drink, I can't get rid of this dry throat feeling. It causes me to cough and my throat is already raw from the illness. Today, though, I have a couple of little spots on my tongue - like tears or splits. (Gross, I know.) And I have this awful tingling sensation in my mouth. I called the pharmacy and spoke to the tech. She said that the medications do that and that sucking on some hard candy can help. I'm going to have DH pick up some sort of hard candy on his way home from work. Is there anything else I can do? I tried googling and pretty much everything I saw said "hard candy" or "drink more water". A humidifier is recommended, but honestly, I have no funds for something like that right now. It's gotten bad enough that I have difficulty swallowing.
Guest inoubliable
I'll try the hard candy route when DH brings some home tonight. I have no sense of taste right now, so eating anything just feels gross to me. I was hoping there'd be something else. Some sort of drink, maybe. Lolly
My dd is on a lot of antihistamines for allergies. She keeps a water bottle with her at. all. times. She is constantly taking small sips. It is annoying, but it allows her to leave the house. One thing you will need to watch for is cavities. She never had any until she started allergy treatments. It seems saliva is key to fighting cavities. When it is gone...yep. Even if you are careful with what you eat and brush like a fiend, they will find you. JuanitaL
Since your husband is picking up hard candy - how about lemonheads? They make me pucker and salivate like crazy.

AK_Mom4
I suffer from this all the time - especially the toungue-burning part. Mine is definitely from one of the meds I take. Rinsing with wamr salt water seems to help with the little sores. During the day, water and sugar-free chewing gum work really well (yeah, I'm that lady who is chewing gum EVERYWHERE - even in the grocery store and church!). At night, I get moderate relief from Biotene rinse. None of the generic rinses work for me at all, so I cough up the $$$ for Biotene. Also, brushing more frequently seems to help. homeschool mom
Biotene mouth wash is made to relieve dry mouth. My dentist gave me a free sample.
Guest inoubliable
Thanks everyone! I've got hard candy and salt water at the ready. If it doesn't improve, I'll go find some Biotene. Can the dry mouth lead to gums/teeth hurting? Last night, my gums starting hurting. Bad. I took some Tylenol and Motrin, it was so bad. It's back again this morning. It feels like when you go to the dentist and you get a particularly brutal dental assistant going at your gum line with zest. I've tried Orajel on my gums but that doesn't last long. This is getting ridiculous - the illness and now side effects from the medication.
Cinder
I hope you find something that helps. Your post reminded me of when I moved to west TX. I spent the first year there dying of thirst and not sweating a drop even though I was drinking over a gallon of water a day. It took about a year for my body to get used to the dryness there. Hope you're feeling better soon!

Happy
I loved Biotene during chemo. The stuff is amazing.
Guest inoubliable
Biotene it is. I just now noticed a yellow coating on my tongue! It just gets worse and worse. I googled and couldn't find much saying that antibiotics or the antihistamines caused it, but I did see where dehydration and/or dry mouth can cause it. Six more days on this antibiotic. Six more days. :crying:
