serendipitous journey
Studies Weekly came up in the current social studies thread as a simple, inexpensive way to boost social studies exposure & meet state standards (in the sense of assuring the child is tracking state standards, not in the sense of thinking the state's standards are inherently better or more rigorous than homeschooled/WTM standards). I noticed several folks liked it for social studied -- anybody tried their other topics? For our state, there's science, health, and character ed too ... Murrayshire
We use it. I bought our State Studies Weekly for my 4th grader......She says she likes them and she refers back to them when a certain topic comes up in our American History Study. My 7th grader is using the 6th grade(middle school) World Studies Weekly to go along with SL G.....it adds a bit of tidbits about what she is covering. I give it to them on Monday and they finish them by Friday when it's time to go over them together. My 1st grader is using the Science Weekly 1.....it's a good jumping off point for different science topics but there is no meat to it. I won't get it next year for my ds...... Both of dd's get the health issue which came in units all at one time unlike the History and Science. I was glad to have the Health one this year and may just continue with it next year......The price is a deal......So, if you decide you don't love it or it just didn't work....then eh....you didn't come out of pocket much. They will send you samples of just about every different issue you want to see.....I just signed up for them on their website or emailed them....I can't remember....but it was a big packet of the grade levels that I requested. I've been meaning to do a review on them on our blog but haven't found the time......
Wheres Toto
I have the regular Studies Weekly covering Social Studies, the Character Study and the Health Study. I've used some of the regular Studies Weekly, haven't started the Character or Health with the kids yet but I've looked them over when planning it out and I like them. The teacher's guide that comes with the character has a lot of extra activities, literature selections and games to play. The Health one has quizzes. serendipitous journey
Thank you both! It is the Character & Health that most interested me -- science is one of our strengths, and I think if I supplement it I'd rather use a Cricket magazine -- but it sounds like these would be worth a try. :)
KellyMama
My order for AL history just arrived today and I think it's possibly the cutest social studies supplement I've ever seen! My rising 4th grader will love it - and my poor 5th gr dd saw it and looked sad because her 4th gr state history was sooo boring! lol She is definitely going to be sneaking these off to read them once her brother is finished with them!
