Gentlemommy
Dd does SO MUCH BETTER when doing word problems. She is a visual, right-brained thinker, and I think the story helps her understand what to do. In any case, she loves them. She is capable of doing problems using just the numbers, but prefers and has a much easier time with word problems. We are taking a break from her formal math and doing LoF, and primary grade challenge math for a while. My question is, would there be an issue if most of her math was in word problem/story form? I'd continue to have her do a few 'just numbers' problems, but the majority would be story form. Would we regret this later?
Arcadia
No, you won't regret it later :) Being good at word problems is a good skill to have. She might be bored with number problems. Word problems on the other hand are more realistic and interesting. Computations in Science are word problems anyway :)
hollyh
Common core problems are heading into the direction of lots of word problems. If your child can think of how to apply in real life, your child is doing well.
mom2bee
The Verbal Math Lesson, the whole point is to do math without pencil and paper. Look at the demos and email the folks who own/run the company.
Halcyon
My 7 yo is the same. We do lots of CWP, Zaccaro and word problems. He hates drill and rote math.
wapiti
How old/what grade level? Beast Academy's text is a story in comic book format. Even more importantly, concepts are presented well for a VSL generally.
