iona
has anyone used both? are they similar? I'm thinking my oldest would do better with an independent spelling program. I feel like I'm torturing him with AAS. It isn't AAS, it is the fact that we have to do it together. We most things together, but this one seems unnecessary. I don't want to add busy work though. Any thoughts?
fourisenough
I have used both and I feel like SW is complete busy work. R&S is so much more content-rich. Rules are taught, applied, and memorized (well, we write them on flash cards so they can be memorized and recited). There is absolutely no fluff or busy work in R&S. A little too much bible for my taste, but it is the best instruction I've seen in an independent/workbook-based program.
myfatherslily
I have been pondering the exact same question. Thanks for asking it! :)
twoxcell
I'm not familiar with Spelling Workout, but we switched from AAS to R&S spelling last summer and I am very happy with it. :)
coffeegal
My 4th grader loves Spelling Workout. Spelling Workout touches on spelling rules, but doesn't spend a lot of time on them. Most lessons begin with a reading assignment where the words are used in context. The next page touches on the spelling rule being covered. The third page is a puzzle page, and the fourth page has a writing and editing assignment. We skip the writing assignment, but ds has enjoyed learning the editing marks. Every 5th or 6th lesson is a review. It's perfect for ds. He loves puzzles, is a strong speller, and just needs a quick review. I think he spends about 5-10 minutes a day on spelling at most. :coolgleamA:
iona
is there a placement guide for swo? I'm thinking for my soon to be third grader. Natural speller. He is halfway through aas4.

Other than A is 1st grade, B 2nd, etc., not to my knowledge. I placed my son in SW at his grade level; it's easy and fun for him.
Mommy_of_4
We have tried both and I much prefer R&S. SWO is nothing but busy work.
mommyto4
R&S is wonderful! I much prefer it to SWO too!
mom31257
I looked at SWO, but went with R&S after reading reviews on here. I've only been using it since January, but I really, really like it.
