matrips
I have the answer Singapore supplied. But i do not understand it. I get a different answer, and can't figure their solution out. Even though they drew it out! Here it is: Rita had 24 more barrettes than Zoe. After she gave 5 barrettes to Zoe, Rita had twice as many barrettes as Zoe. How many barrettes did Rita have left? Thanks.
boscopup
Before: [--- Z ---] [--- Z ---][24] After: [--- Z ---][5] [--- Z ---][5][--- Z ---][5] So 24 must equal Z + 10. Z = 14. R = 38. (typed on my phone - ack!) eta: I think I'm wrong. eta again: no wait, I'm right.
ccolopy
I got 28. boscopup seems to be right except for the last step. 14x2 = 28 Rita had 33 and gave away 5 to make 28. Zoe had 9 and accepted 5 to make 14.
nmoira
After: Rita ------------------|------------------| Zoe ------------------| Before: Rita ------------------|------------------|-5-| Zoe --------------|-5-| (Rita's first | should line up with Zoe's second.) We're told that the red distance is 24... 24-5-5 = 14 One segment represents 14 barrettes. Rita has 28 barrettes left. (names corrected) Start: Rita -- 33 Zoe -- 9 End: Rita -- 28 Zoe --
matrips
This is my response to the first person. Going back to look at the others. Well, I did it differently but I understand your solution perfectly, and it's the same answer I got. However it is not the correct one according to the answer key. Anyone else? It would be helpful if you provided the answer from the key.

matrips
Still understanding boscopup but not the others (they were right) I'm feeling completely dense on this one. Why can't I follow the logic,! Answer. Rita had 28 left.
nansk
Nmoira answer is correct :) AND, she solved it in the logical way - After first, then Before. Most books will show Before first. Moira's way is easier to explain to a child. :)

nmoira
Before: [--- Z ---] [--- Z ---][24] After: [--- Z ---][5] [--- Z ---][5][--- Z ---][5] So 24 must equal Z + 10. Z = 14. R = 38. (typed on my phone - ack!) eta: I think I'm wrong. eta again: no wait, I'm right. If you're going to do it this way, the second step will look something like this. It is *not* a before and after showing both girls, and it is a bit convoluted in the explaining. [--- Z ---][5][---z---][5] [--- Z ---][.......24 - 5] (These should line up exactly.) So 24 - 5 = z + 10 Z =

kiwik
R-5 = 2(Z+2.5) R=2Z+10 R=Z+24 Z+24=2Z+10 Z=14 That was my first attempt and i think it works? Whoops I mean third attempt.
