Mrs. A Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 ? we have listened to a few if Edith Nesbit's books and all the Oz books, but I would like to branch out a bit. The problem is that I don't know which books or authors to search for and browsing the catalog is too overwhelming. So if you have any recommendations for the 5-7 crowd I'd love to hear! Thanks! Rosie_0801 Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 We've listened to a few. The Secret Garden is always good :) Quote
Hunter Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Not many. We don't use many audio books, and the ones I do choose are carefully chosen to provide the best models possible. About once a year, audible.com gives me a few months of reduced subscription that gives me a credit a month. The rest I get from the library. Sometimes I buy a book from Currclick or CBD; Elsie Dinsmore was a favorite of one student. I got a bunch free from Amazon/Audible. Quote
Melenie Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 The Andrew Lang Fairy Books, Secret Garden, Little Princess, Heidi, Beatrix Potter, Peter Pan are some that we have enjoyed at that age. I prefer to go to booksshouldbefree.com to search for children's books. It often links back to Librivox, but I prefer the search option on that site. Quote
Aurelia Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 We've listened to Just So Stories, The Railway Children, The Story of the Treasure Seekers, and The Princess and the Goblin. Quote
edeemarie Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 We are currently listening to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from the booksshouldbefree website. It is wonderful! There are different voices for each character and it is very lively and entertaining. We listened to 5 chapters this evening already. http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/book/alices-adventures-in-wonderland-by-lewis-carroll Quote
Mrs. A Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 Thanks for the suggestions. keep then coming! I bookmarked the books should be free site awhile ago but had forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. Quote
sueh16 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 There is a reader named Kara Shallenberg who reads a lot of children's books, including some of the books mentioned here. Her voice takes a little getting used to, but she reads with good expression. She reads Grammar Land, Heidi, The Golden Goose Book, and others that I can't remember right now. My kids have enjoyed all of her recordings that we've listened to so far. Also, we've listened to many of the Thornton Burgess books. A man named John Leader reads many of them. He is very good. HTH, Sue Quote

EmilyK Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Kara has a website kayray.org. She has pages that talk about homeschooling, and audiobooks, and links to her podcasts. Quote
Guest phil chenevert Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Of course I am predudiced, but I would like to recommend several books that I recorded: Children's Life of the Bee by the famed naturalist Maeterlinck, Maurice. He modified his original classic book specifically for children and it contains great information. Pollyanna which is just one of many versions but soooo much fun to read; The Story of Dr. Doolittle (the orignial book) and Half Past Bedtime which is a collection of bedtime stories that I thought were exceptionally well written. VeritasMama Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Here's a wiki of the books from the Ambleside Online booklist that are on librivox, since you are looking for 5-7 that would be the first few years. http://wiki.librivox..._Ambleside_List We love Kara Shallenburg and Karen Savage as well :).
