Standard testing jitters...anybody but me got them?

Recommended Posts

My materials haven't yet arrived and I feel like the kid who is checking to see if the postman made a second delivery today. I find myself wanting to order for summer based on how horrible our test scores are going to be. I'm having horrible visions of my boys filling out the wrong circles because they lost track of where they were on the page! (I did that myself once-caught it in time, but the horror!)

Having been homeschooled myself I always found testing to be kind of fun, because we got the rest of the day off after testing. The questions always seemed so easy. I always finished ahead of time except in math. I never felt anxious.

And now I know what MY mother was feeling while she sat in the hall waiting on all of us to finish.

I'm giving the tests myself this year, per state recs, and next year the boys will test with a group, so I'll be the one sitting in the hall biting my nails to the quick.

Anybody else care to commiserate? Offer advice? Add to my terror? :scared:

I'm waiting for DD's EXPLORE scores, and I half expect negative numbers! Since the SAT-10 lets you bubble in the test book for grades 1-2, and is untimed, she'd never before done a separate answer sheet, nor had she had a time limit (although according to her, she finished with lots of time left-which has me nervous too-did she even READ the questions?). I wasn't as nervous when she was taking it (except that she'd go to find a rest room and get lost. As it turned out, one of the older girls who'd done the test before effectively adopted DD and stayed with her on breaks-and walked out with her to meet the parents. I love nurturing 5th graders!) as I am waiting for the envelope.

So, yes, I commiserate.

I always get the jitters before DD11 tests. Which is silly because she thinks testing is fun and always does fine.

But it is one of the weak spots in MY armor - what if I didn't teach her the right stuff? What if she forgets how to fill in the little circles? What if she wanders off during testing to chase butterflies?

It's silly, but I go thru it every year too.

If we do them, this will be our first year. I'm really scared. LOL! I think I am going to ry to find someone to evaluate their work instead. In my state, that is an option instead of testing. I think I may take that option, but still test just to make sure we are on track. I really hate testing. I fel like I have to teach to the test and I definitely have not been doing that. Eeekkkk.....

I meant to write a more serious note after the silly one, but had to leave.

We are waiting for results of one test and prepping for a different one.

I always worry she'll be sick. Either getting sick, in the throes of being sick, or getting over being sick.

Then I move on to careless error worries.

Next up is running out of time.

After that is skipping one question which will effectively mess up the entire bubble sequence.

Not to be forgotten are the dreaded gaps. I convince myself the whole test will be centered around the areas I hoped to cover, but never got around to.

I will say that it gets better, though. As nervous as I am now, it's nothing compared to that first test. Hang in there!

That sums it up well.

I get nervous when my kids do any kind of testing. DD has a ballet exam next week and I'm super anxious about that. And watching DS do his TKD belt testing just about kills me. :svengo:

Glad to know it's normal. It's ridiculous in a way. I NEVER suffered test anxiety in my life. I remember well walking into a class one day to find out that we had a test I hadn't studied for and sitting down almost whistling to take it.

But when it's my boys, and it's the first time, and I'm giving the test, and sitting on pins and needles waiting for the test to get here, and the DH will see the scores first because they are coming to his in-box, and I'm just sure we're going to bomb something....

Lord have mercy. I need me something!

Terrified. My son flopped really bad last year. Totally froze in the group test room he was in and barely did any of the test. Thus he has to retest this year as our state requires the record. :( He is just really not a test kind of a kid.

Eep. Thankfully my state allows home testing. I plan to have the boys test with others next year, but I sure was glad to be able to proctor at home for their first time.
