praisefor3
Final decision. I'm not joining. But I'd like to buy an elliptical asap. Any recommendations? Less than $300 would still be less than the gym so I'd like to stay around (or less) than $300. I have never owned one but I'm pretty convinced that's the machine for me. I just don't know what I'm looking for. Thank you!
EKS
Ellipticals can vary immensely in how comfortable they are. I would highly recommend that you try them (for a while, long enough to make something hurt or feel uncomfortable if it is going to) before you buy anything. Also, when I was shopping for mine, I noticed that there was a big comfort difference between the the ones that were less than $500 and the ones that were in the $500-$1000 range. I have been using my elliptical for four years now and love it!
praisefor3
I'm seeing that $300 may be unrealistic. Could I get some recommendations no matter what the price? I'm still not convinced I have to spend $1000 but are there any good choices for less? I wanted to start tonight but now am so undecided what to get and what I need that I feel like quitting already. LOL. I can see how faithful I'm going to be! :D
EKS
This was several years ago but I think it was about $800 and was on sale for about $600. It has been a good machine but after almost a year it did have two things break. It was covered under warrenty and I haven't had problems since. I would look around to see if you can find something on sale, a lot of times you can get a few hundred dollars off.
Jenny in Atl
I have one from these folks (link below). I think we paid about $600 (it was on sale). I have had it for three years and only had a couple minor problems that were easily fixed. I use it daily, 35+ mins at high tension, so I give it a hard workout. I've also seen some great deals at Costco (if there is one by you or via their web site). Also check used sports equipment places. This is a great time to start looking. Folks get equipment for the New Year and quickly find they don't have time or motivation. http://www.proform.com/ Good luck!
Cathy in IL
It looks like there are good closeout sales at the Proform site. I have been thinking about investing in one of these, but I don't even know where to start in choosing one. I can't get to the gym as a single mom with 3 (usually more) children. I need to do something to stay in shape.
Janna
While I can't give you a recommendation for one to buy, I will say that you need to seriously research and try out which one you do end up buying. Elliptical's can be very taxing on your feet, legs and back if it's not the right fit. Stride length is a huge factor. I went through this a few months ago - October maybe. I thought it would be cheaper for me to buy an Elliptical rather than get the gym membership. I tried some out at Sears and Dick's Sporting Goods etc. Knew what stride length I needed (I'm tall) and then looked and looked in the paper and on Craig's List. I couldn't find any that were what I needed, but I really needed to get exercising. So we went to the local gym to check them out. They are an extremely family friendly place with a rock climbing wall, free tennis lessons, game room, bowling alley, jump houses - all for the kids. And then tons of classes, a pool and of course loads of cardio and weight lifting equipment for the adults. We negotiated hard with them, over a period of about a week. We ended up with an 18 month membership that will cost us less than $1000 when it's said and done. There is no way I could have found a quality elliptical in the comfort and stride length I needed for that price. It's the only machine in the cardio area I use and they only have 2 that are truly my comfort level so I have had to learn what times are the best to go that at least one of the 2 I like best is available. I know you said you already went to the gym and decided not to get the membership. Just keep in mind that it's probably not wise to just grab an elliptical because it's cheap. You can really hurt your body that way and nothing is worth that. Good luck!
lynn
I find them very ackwards to use. I have owned a nordic trak for over 10 years that I loved, movers broke it, had to buy a new one and it wasn't the same and now I have a treadmill which gets used daily. When I went to a resort I decided to try different equiment to see if I wanted to consider something else and I could only use the elliptcal thing for a few minutes probably because I was use to the others. Sears usually had several of their workout machines set up to try
