Brenda in MA
Does anyone have a table or chart that gives an approximate correspondence between the chapters in Lingua Latina and the lessons/units in Henle? Also, does anyone know how far in Henle one would need to go to cover all of the grammar in Lingua Latina Book 1 and Lingua Latina Book 2? TIA, Brenda
latinteach
Does anyone have a table or chart that gives an approximate correspondence between the chapters in Lingua Latina and the lessons/units in Henle? Also, does anyone know how far in Henle one would need to go to cover all of the grammar in Lingua Latina Book 1 and Lingua Latina Book 2? These 2 series are very, very different. Lingua Latina (Oerberg) is a Direct Method textbook, whereas Henle is a Grammar-based textbook, so I think it would be difficult to show exactly how they correspond. The philosophy behind the methods of these 2 books is quite different. Henle teaches forms first, with a limited amount of syntax and translation. Lingua Latina teaches forms and syntax simultaneously, in Latin, in the context of a story which is intended to be read as Latin, rather than translated into English. That being said, most people who start in Henle and then switch over to Latina Lingua tend to do so after covering about seven chapters in Henle. But if you want to correlate the grammar, you could probably do so by consulting the scope and sequence outlined in either "Latine Disco" and "Grammatica Latina" (the original Oerberg grammatical commentaries) or in Jeanne Neumann's "Lingva Latina: A College Companion" (probably the better choice, as its intended as an English language grammar commentary to the course) to the grammar presented in Henle. TIA, Brenda Brenda, What is it, exactly that you want to do with these two programs? Are you intending to use one as a main text and the other as a supplement? As Latinteach shared, it is difficult to get the two to correspond. The order is so completely different. Upon finishing Roma Aeterna, the 2nd book in the LL series, you should be reading unadapted real Latin authors. I would venture a guess that completing both books in LL would correspond roughly to completing at *least* books 1-3 in Henle, if not book 4. There are a ton of threads on the Henle/LL combination. Have you done a search for them?
Brenda in MA
Brenda, What is it, exactly that you want to do with these two programs? Lisa, We are using Henle as our main program. My son has finished Unit 5 in Henle I. We started with Lingua Latina towards the end of last school year. We got as far as Cap. IV, spending about 10 days on each lesson, reading and rereading it and then answering the questions. We had learned most of the grammar we've seen so far in LL through Henle, but there were a few new things. We will be doing up through Henle I Unit 10 this school year, and I'm wondering how far we might/should get in LL in the coming year. I have the Latine Disco and the Teacher's Materials, and they have been helpful. I just wondered if anyone out there had put together a rough correspondence between the two programs. clwcain
I think Plaid Dad has a couple of articles about this on his website, but I can't find the article at the moment. Maybe it's discussed in his LCC (book is not on me right now) and I'm mistaken in my recollection of having read it online.

Brenda I don't know of any resource that has "married" the two programs. I would venture a guess it is because their grammar sequence is so different. (For ex., Henle doesn't deal w/Deponent verbs until Unit 13, but Oerberg has you working w/them in ch. 16 of LL - Familia Romana). The College Companion would be of some help to you, as all of the grammar is explained in *English*.

I use both for myself. I use Henle until I'm so tired of it I could scream ;-) And then I switch to Lingua Latina, and go until it becomes difficult. Then I switch back to Henle. Doing it that way, I *usually* encounter grammar in Henle before I hit it in LL. Not always, but usually.
