Dianne-TX
I am wanting to paint my dd's desk. It is yellow and has a flower design on the drawer. The yellow and flower design is in the furniture, it wasn't done on top or seperately. It was originally bought that way, although we are the second owners. Do I use primer and an oil based paint? I'm really clueless on what to do.
TeenagerMom
I just use a good paint/primer in 1 like Valspar from Lowes. Rough it up with sandpaper, then wipe it down really good before you paint it! I painted DS's dresser and it turned out awesome!
TXMomof4
I just use semi-gloss interior latex. Finish with Rustoleum polycrylic. Easy clean up and I've had zero problems even on our coffee table that I painted two years ago. We sit, stand, put our feet up and it still looks great. I love painting furniture! CandaceC
Milk paint is another option that I am loving!! I have painted 2 pieces of furniture with it so far and have written about my experience here: http://www.mercyisnew.com/2013/03/another-milk-paint-success-tips.html?m=
magnificent_baby
I learned the most from this blog, and followed her step by step tutorial. So fun! Look through the project gallery, as her instructions differ depending on what you want to achieve. I followed the project entitled "green nursery dresser + how to brush paint furniture". My dresser turned out great. http://www.centsationalgirl.com/furniture-makeovers// I did a ton of online reading first, even looking through youtube tutorials before I settled on a plan (which was the above instructions). Pinterest also has a ton of project pictures with links to how to blogs. Have fun!
Miss Cornelia Snook
Man...I really want to paint my daughter's furniture white. It's maple and it's fine, but not the look I want for her room. However, it used to be my furniture, and I remember all the work my mother put into refinishing it all after she bought it a various yard sales. I just can't bring myself to paint it! DianeW88
I just painted the bathroom cabinets in my boys' bathroom black. They were that icky sort of golden country oak that was super popular about ten years ago, and I couldn't stand it anymore. I just used a primer (whichever one the guy at Lowe's recommended...Valspar, it worked great!) and painted two coats of black over it. Didn't need to sand a thing. The primer is oil-based, and completely necessary in order to get the paint to stick and not flake off. Took me two afternoons, and they look amazing. My dd came home from college and thought it was a whole new cabinet!

Susan C.
DON'T use water based on top of oil based paint. Not good....... If you don't know what is there, use oil based.
TXMomof4
DON'T use water based on top of oil based paint. Not good....... If you don't know what is there, use oil based. Or sand it well. Water based paint will bead up over oil based paint. But if you sand well it isn't a problem.
