Lang Syne Boardie
I once printed out a doc that I thought was a fabulous illustration for teens but I didn't need it yet. Now I do, and I have no idea where I put it. (typical) It's a chart showing that most forms of high school writing and other presentations all follow a similar progression. A thesis is like a hypothesis, for example. Does anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?

A thesis is like a hypothesis, for example. Does anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? Just want to tell you (since nobody has answered you) that although I don't have the doc, I DO know what you are talking about as far as things being related. I bet you could make your own doc by taking the scientific method and relabeling the steps with the names of the different parts of a research paper, then relabeling it with the different parts of an argument, then relabeling it with the different steps for solving a math problem. I know this works because when I was trying to explain the various sorts of academic writing, I related everything back to either the steps for solving a math problem or the scientific method. If you find that doc, please do let us know! Nan

The design process isn't a bad thing to use this for, either. They all deal narrowing a question or wondering into problem with a limited scope, looking at your knowns and unknowns, figuring out how to get from one to the other, deciding how sure you are about your answer, and then thinking about the implications.
