J-rap
My high school senior is going to be studying out of the country all next year on a one-year program. She may apply at a few colleges in the fall before she leaves, for early admission for the following year. She'll be applying for music (vocal) scholarships. She is involved in the choir at the local ps, and the choral director works with her (and every student) weekly on a song, to be used in competitions, festival, etc. As long as she is in the peak of working on her music now -- and won't be come next fall -- I'd like to put together a CD early for college music scholarship applications. Is there a typical format, length, etc. required? Or just one song of one's choice? I understand every college might do it differently. I'm just looking for a general requirement, if there is one. Thank you!
violamama
It would be very much worth your while to find a local voice teacher with experience coaching students through that process. It's great you're looking ahead. I've served on many a scholarship committee staring down a pile of audition CDs and it's a simple fact that a polished one with smart repertoire choices can make a big difference. A good voice teacher will know what they want and should have access to a decent way to get the recording done.
J-rap
Thank you! I suppose her choral director now might be a good source, so I should get in touch with him about it. I know that he has access to recording equipment.
Beth in OH
Will she be auditioning as a voice major? Those requirements are very specific to each school, and students need to prepare a fair amount of repertoire. Audition season is late Dec. to early March and many schools will not accept recorded auditions. I've gone through music auditions with two kids now, and all of their schools award scholarships bases on the auditions--whether live on campus, regional (recorded by an admissions officer) , or recorded audition repertoire. If you want to get a recording now, your dd really needs to compare the repertoire requirements from several desired schools and see if she can find some pieces in common. Please know that the music auditions/scholarship process is usually pretty intentional, even for lesser known programs. It really does require some research and specific preparation.
