Lynnae
I'm trying to think through my plans for my upcoming 5th grader. I already know I want to use EIW for writing, but I'd like to supplement (or maybe even replace) the grammar with something that teaches diagramming. My son picks up on things quickly and likes workbooks. He's not strong in actually writing things out (as he would need to with R&S). I only have experience with R&S, which I love for the content, but I'm not sure it's going to work with this particular child. He prefers something a bit more independent. And like I said before, he likes workbooks. So I was thinking about Abeka, but then I saw Junior Analytical Grammar. If you have experience with either, I'd love to hear about it. And if you do EIW with another grammar program, how does that work out? How do you schedule it?
Ellie
Well, if your ds isn't strong in actually writing, R&S would be good to help him become stronger, eh? :-) R&S's English texts include every single thing that the dc need to know to do the assignments; ABeka does depend somewhat on the teacher's curriculum for some instruction from the teacher. Also, R&S covers some topics that ABeka doesn't, such as poetry and public speaking, possibly the use of reference materials (I don't have my ABeka scope and sequence handy). Thanks, that's good to know (the S&S of Abeka vs. R&S). I do like R&S a lot. And I keep going back to it. I just remember all the complaining he did when he used it a couple of years ago. LOL And of the three programs, the price on R&S is the best, too. I think I need to stop chasing the elusive "best" curriculum.
Georgiana Daniels
Keeping my ears open on this one--will be ordering for next year soon. We've been using ABeka but I'm open to other options. Eons ago we used ABeka with our 7/8th grader and I was pleased with the intensity of it, but she'd been in school before that and had little training (which might be why ABeka seemed so rigorous.) Literary Mom
We used A Beka for my workbook-loving 4th grader last year, and it was decent, but now in fifth grade, we've been using R&S, and it's definitely a better program. My daughter also seems to enjoy it more than A Beka.
