charcat13
Does anyone know of a cheap (or better, free) newspaper design program? When I was in college we used Quark but I can't justify $200 for a program that's not a core subject. My daughter is interested in this for the moment and I think it will be fun and educational to tinker with it for a week or so.
Arcadia
It is possible to do a school newsletter style newspaper using Microsoft Word. For something fancier like a conference souvenir magazine, I had used Adobe Pagemaker.

Ellie
I'm a PageMaker fan. :-) Not nearly as good as PageMaker or one of the other major page-layout programs (Quark, PageMaker, InDesign, Ventura, FrameMaker) is Microsoft Publisher. It also isn't nearly as expensive. You can do page layout in Word, but Word is a much better word processor than a page layout program. I can make stuff look fairly decent in Word because of my PageMaker experience, but it's painful, lol.
piraterose
Mircrosoft Publisher $109. I would definitely go with Publisher over just Word. Word is not a good program to try to design in beyond a term paper. (This from someone that works for a newspaper for the last 17 years and is a graphic artist). Five More Minutes
Any chance you use a Mac? Because Pages is great for that sort of thing. ETA: Scribus is an open-source option. A bit clunky sometimes, but still good.
naturegirl
The Adobe Create Suite lets you have a one month free trial. One of the programs you would have access to is InDesign, which is similar to Quark. If your daughter really loves it, it is $29.99 a month (I think they are running a special right now for $19.99 a month). That is the the student/teacher rate, which we qualify for as homeschoolers. You wouldn't own the programs, you just pay a monthly fee to access the programs. I know that wouldn't appeal to everybody, but for me, I'm happy I can finally afford Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
