TravelingChris
As many of you know, my dd is very sick. She took out a student loan last summer (2011/2012 school year) and maybe one last semester (I am not sure because the loan payout was completely messed up from the summer). But anyway, she did go to school half time or full time in Fall of 2011, Summer of 2012, and Fall of 2012. I know that both Falls were, in fact, full time, but summer was half time. She started out Spring semesters both times in 2012 and this year, and both times had to get a medical withdrawal. SHe has not flunked out, rather she has a high GPA still which is remarkable considering she was seizing during some tests last Fall. We are now focused on just getting her well. At the end of this month, she is going to see the highest level of Epilepsy center, which hopefully will give us an answer to why she is seizing and what can we do about it. But I just realized that maybe the Fed Government wants her to repay that loan she got in the summer or this last fall (she didn't get one this semester) and I really don't know what the rules are. She is seizing so much that she isn't thinking all that well right now so I want to help her in this. Does she have a grace period of how long she isn't in school before she is in trouble? Is the fact that she makes no money at all but relies completely on us to give her money any issue? Any advice?
PinkyandtheBrains.
Call them. They will work something out with you. They have many deferment options, and even ways to forgive the loan in a few serious circumstances. Be sure to tell them about her health issues making her currently unable to attend school or work. There are many options, but it is best to call them soon before the lateness becomes an issue.
TravelingChris
Well my question is, is she even considered late at all? Since she started taking out student loans, she did one summer session and one regular session. Now she isn't doing anything. Won't she only be in trouble if she doesn't do summer? It depends on her loan, and what it requires. I'd still call them to be on the safe side. I "think" she should be fine, but I am not 100% certain. Does she get paper statements about the loan or emails? I'd watch for a notice. They will send something if they expect payment at some point. If you happen to miss a statement and it ends up late or delinquent, as long as she has been seeking medical treatment and can show on paper what is going on they usually will back date a deferral request quite a bit. redsquirrel
It is always better to call. Just remember that during any deferments the loan is still gaining interest.
HelenNotOfTroy
Interest does not accrue on subsidized federal student loans during deferments. Forbearance allows the student to not make payments but interest accrues. Interest on unsubsidized loans always accrues. She will need to contact her student loan provider to find out whether she will qualify for a deferment, She is probably not in default or late since she did attend last semester and started to this semester. It is best to be ahead of them because a defaulted student loan will make her ineligible for further student aid.
creekland
No knowledge about the loans (I agree with calling), but I do want to wish you and her well. I hope you are finally able to get some answers - preferably "fixable" answers. It's awful when serious things are happening and no one knows why or how to stop them. :grouphug: I remember back when you first posted (and all the in between times) and it really seems like a long time to go without knowing. Kudos to her for keeping her high GPA through it all! Kudos to you for keeping your sanity (as a mom)!
