bttrflyvld
For the child to work by themselves?
mohsmom23
I've never used Spelling Workout, but my daughter does R&S spelling totally independent except for the weekly test.
Seasons
I have no experience with Spelling Workout but I can tell you that my1st grade ds is using R&S spelling 2 independently. He is a natural speller and approaches the exercises almost like a game - "I think they're trying to trick me here mom . .. listen to this"
redsquirrel
I have used both. My older boy used spelling workout and my younger is using R&S. I have only used the first book (grade 2) of R&S so far. Honestly, I think they are the same in the amount of teacher involvement. I don't notice any difference.
Juliegmom
I agree that they both require about the same amount of teacher involvement. My daughter is using SWO- Level B this year for 2nd grade. She has been able to breeze through it with little direction. She enjoys it, but it seems like busywork. I purchased R&S and had planned to use it next year until I discovered Building Spelling Skills by CLP. I believe R&S can be done independently, but it depends on the age and ability of your child. A child who can read well and who no longer requires phonics review would have no problem. You can see a sample of R&S Spelling here http://www.milestone...d_Staff_Grade_2
boscopup
They should both be the same, I would think (though I've never used SWO). Kid does workbook, you give test at the end of the week, right? R&S is like that, at least. If the child isn't reading yet, I wouldn't put them in R&S Spelling until they can read it themselves.
TheAutumnOak
My oldest son has used both (we used Spellong Workout in the past and has used R&S for the past two years)...SWO involved me more slightly because it was more difficult for my son to understand the writing and extra parts to it...In theory, they both should only involve you to give the quiz, but the extra stuff with SWO had to be explained more, where he understands R&S more on his own...We prefer R&S... G5052
About the same for us. We ended up using Spelling Workout longer though (about six years, maybe?) because they liked the books better, but I really didn't see that much difference in the outcome. The content is of course different with the Spelling Workout books bringing in popular culture and such here and there.
