Pen
If you saw the prior thread as I was deciding, I decided yes. For one thing ds and pup seem to love each other -- more than just any dog and any kid (a couple of other pups we visited were very cute--but not this sort of connection). I plan to try to do school as much normal as I can this next week to have everyone be in proper rhythm--though I will probably assign an essay on dog care and otherwise sort of have it be a week of dog related schooling. Dog science, dog history, I don't suppose there is dog math. Any other thoughts toward having this all go well? I think the SN area that has created trouble sometimes w/ old dog is the SPD. Ds wants more contact and tactile feeling and sniffing and blowing raspberries on doggie tumtum than the old dog likes. Hopefully not such a trouble with a bonded puppy, but experience and thoughts on that also welcome.
quark
Just quickly read through (skimmed) your response on the other thread...definitely agree with you about the cons of smaller dogs...I do have to bend down a lot but lately I have just been sitting on the floor to do the stuff I have to do like grooming etc. And definitely agree about the risk of being killed by cougars etc. I asked if your son is an only due to the companionship + easier to juggle homeschooling issues. Mine does get distracted. However, I think it's easier to handle one distracted kid vs a bunch kwim? Congratulations on your decision and I hope the puppy brings all of you immense joy. Our guy, though not a puppy, has really changed our family dynamic for the better. What a great idea to integrate dog studies! My son would love this too. We took about 2 weeks off school to watch dog training videos and read dog training books but now I'm so tempted to include more dog-related materials. :) I found this interesting-sounding film for starters: http://www.pbs.org/dogs-eyes/ Not sure of it's any good (hope there's nothing too sad in there!) but I thought I'd link it here for you. We'll try to watch it tomorrow. Will share more resources as we find them. :) Take care!

What dog training videos and books did you find good--especially for your son?
