Veritas Press Omnibus ...

I think they are worth it. I own vol 1,2 and 3. I guess it depends what you are comparing it to. I looked at the cost of buying literature study guides with a Christian worldview. It was going to cost about $20 per book studied. Omnibus 1 covers 37 books. Even if I don't use it all, it is still good value.

I think Omnibus is a good value if you like the assignments and the commentaries for the books, and if you are a person who doesn't feel guilty if you don't do everything in the book. We used Omnibus I, and while I used some of the teacher materials such as comprehension questions and games, we all disliked the commentaries. We didn't go on with it. I also was annoyed by the way the teacher's guide CD was set up - the pdf format is nice, but most pages had the same artwork as the book, so printing a page could waste a lot of ink. Maybe they didn't want people to print it?

I would really study the samples online before buying.

I can't say enough about omnibus. This is our first year using it with our 9th grader. He is doing omnibus 3. We will definitely be staying with it. I will be starting my other son in book 1 next . It is a lot but it counts as a credit of Literature, a credit of History and a credit of Theology (an elective). I don't see how you could do a book over 2 years and give proper high school credit. What we love is that by reading the chapter in the textbook before reading the actual book they have such a wonderful understanding so the reading is easier. I found no reason to print off of the cd. I would put it in our laptop and read off there. The answers they give for all the questions allow you to have a meaningful conversation without having read the book.

I just receive my Omnibus 3 in the mail. It looks like more than we can do in one year. From your post it sounds like you are taking 2 years to do Omnibus 3; is that correct? If so, you indicate that you love it and that the pace you are using is just fine. I am looking for any tips or advice on how to use this book. I know that we simply cannot do everything in it, all of the assignments, and complete it in one school year. But I don't want to leave anything out. What parts of the assignments do you use, all of them? What parts do you do orally? What parts do you assign your student to write? Do you assign every 750 word essay? If so, do you do that weekly? Maybe two years is the answer to fully using this resource and getting the most out of it. I would love ot hear from some moms who have used this and exactly what parts of the lessons they used and how they scheduled it all.

I had responded to this thread already but remembered something when this popped into my inbox. Before I bought Omnibus 1 I spoke with a teacher who used it in a school setting. He knew I would be using it as a homeschooler, not in a school setting, but said he absolutely would not stretch it over two years, and absolutely would leave some things out. He opined that most teachers would leave some things out - topics or books or assignments that each teacher determined weren't necessary. I think he named one or two books he omitted completely, but I can't remember what they are!

We have used Omnibus for 3 years. It is wonderful. As others have said, you can omit some of the works. If you do all the primary and secondary books, you can count it as an honors class. Omni is a lot of work, but it leads to some great discussions, and counts for 3 classes (English, Bible, and History). As an aside, we use Kings Meadow history lectures as well. The 2 work nicely together!
