KatieJ
I almost always vote yes, but this one is kind of bothering me. Our shipment of Bacon from Baconfreak arrived yesterday. It was mailed Monday from California. Clearly the ice pack with it was melted long before it arrived in Michigan yesterday. yes, it was cold, but where has it been for 3 days before it got here? I have emailed the company and hopefully they will send me a new shipment. What do you think? I
*********
Wait. You've got a company sending you bacon. In the mail. From California to Michigan. Whaaa? :p Ok, well, if I was getting bacon in the mail, lol, I'd want it to be overnighted in a cooler with freezer packs. I'd expect the freezer packs to still be frozen when I got it. Guest submarines
Sniff test. If it is bad, you'll know.
Heatherwith4
I'd eat it if it smells ok.
Catwoman
I wouldn't trust the sniff test. I wouldn't eat it. You could get really sick if it has potentially been thawed for days. :ack2: I'm sure the company will send a new shipment.
BridgeTea
Hold on. There's a place called Baconfreak?! (I predict a momentary, mass stampede from here to there...)
Word Nerd
I'd do just what you've already done—notify the company. I wouldn't eat it, as you have no idea how long it was kept cold or whether it got too warm and for how long.
Annie G
Did this shipment take longer than usual to get to you? I order frozen veggies (grew up in the south and can't get my beloved zipper peas in Chicagoland) and they ship with dry ice- when they are delivered the 3rd day the dry ice may be gone but the peas are still frozen solid. Once they were very cold but not frozen and the company sent replacements with no hesitation at all. And that was for peas- not raw meat. So I'd be pretty cautious about how long between when the ice pack melted and the bacon arrived at your house. But boy would it be hard to throw out bacon that might still be good! Guest submarines
I'd eat it if it smells ok. We've eaten bacon that smells slightly off many times. We get naturally smoked bacon from a farmers' market. By the end of the week, even if it is in the fridge, it always smells slightly off, which is treated by a very good frying :coolgleamA: . None of us had any ill effects, and it smells just fine after frying or baking. If our bacon is not eaten within a week, it smells and looks bad, and then I toss it out. (Well, this happened exactly once :tongue_smilie: ).

I think it was at least one day if not two longer than normal. Usually it ships on Monday and I have it by Wednesday. The first shipment arrived when DH was home so I just grabbed it and threw it in the fridge. DIdn't think about it too much as it was his Christmas gift. It was fine. 2nd shipment, I just think got here faster. I have inherited my Grandmother's cast iron stomach, but my DH did not. He got sick from Horseradish we ordered thru the mail. I mean really sick. He is now overly cautious, and rightly so. I would think by the time the ice pack thawed it was already into colder weather climate and is probably fine. But then there is the but..
Catwoman
Why would you take a chance? The company (or the shipper) messed up, and the bacon should be replaced. Period. It's not like you accidentally left the package in the car when you got home from the store or something. This wasn't your mistake, so I don't think there is even the slightest reason why you should eat the bacon and potentially get incredibly sick. Laura Corin
Bacon is preserved. It used to be hung from the rafters in the kitchen until slices were cut off it. I'd eat it. Laura
KatieJ
Baconfreak says its fine. One of the two packages is shelf stable for up to 90 days. Really? I am quite sure we will not be putting that one to the test!

Unicorn.
Don't eat it. Ship it to me, I'll eat it for you! :D Bacon has a lot of salt. A lot. Seriously, you could pretty much eat it raw, and you'd be ok. Like Laura said, they used to just hang it from the rafters and cut chunks off. It's fine.
