Guest
anyone? Does this guide have a list for a book basket in the back? I plan to get most of the books from the library, but if there were some favorites, I would like to buy a couple...
cbollin
yes, book basket list is in the ECC manual, sorted by weeks that they'd fit in the most ideal. ones marked with asterisks tend to the ones MFW thought were best of best. I've used ECC twice... uhm.. I didn't always do a lot of extra read aloud with longer stuff. We'd enjoy book basket together some times,... but in terms of reading lots of out loud with longer novels.. just not always my thing to do. I'd get audio books so they could listen to some of them. Or if it was non chapter book, I would read... I'm blanking on titles... we liked the cookbooks that were listed because it wasn't just recipes. uhmm.. maybe I should look in my manual and see if something sticks out. it's been almost 5 years since last time I taught ECC maybe if you looked through the ideas forum on mfw board for each country, maybe some people left ideas there on "ooh.. we loved this book... omg!" http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewforum.php?f=15 well.. I'm looking at book basket list.. about 400 titles.. lots of fond memories. but then again, I was using library and checked them out and returned and they were fun. I guess I shouldn't have typed anything... I'm a little tired...
Guest
Thanks, Crystal. I will look through the message board and see if I find something like that. I guess I was just hoping that there were some titles that people just loved, maybe I will find that on their board.
cbollin
I've been trying to think which titles people post about... but it tend to be package books they talk about. I guess with the breadth of basket titles... not sure I've seen patterns of favorites. are you looking for non fiction, fiction, ? either? we liked the Count Your Way Through _______ series Cooking the _______ Way series. lots of the books were on lists with FIAR titles and other lists. I guess since I used the library instead of buying.. I don't feel like I have the "you gotta get this one" kind of feel. hoping others respond or might narrow down with a better link for you
estelleblue
I try to focus on the books that are giving my kids a view of what it might be like to live in the country being studied, such as Children Just LIke Me, Frederico: Child of Brazil, etc. There are often Gail Gibbons books that correspond with the habitat being studied, those seem to give just the right amount of information without being overwhelming for my children's ages. And then if there is a classic type novel recommended for the country being studied, such as Anne of Green Gables for Canada, I try and find that on audiobook at the library. For the ages of my children (7 & 6, we are not following MFW exact age recs), focusing on what the climate is like and what the people are like in the specific country seems to help them relate to the information. Hope that helps.
Juliegmom
I plan to add in Children Like Me and Around the World in 80 Tales. We will definitely include Anne of Green Gables and Heidi. I've also purchased a lot of Highlights Top Secret Adventures country guide books from Ebay which will be helpful since we live overseas. Juliegmom
I've hopped around the MFW bloll and remember seeing How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World a few times.
joyfulhomeschooler
One of our favs was Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot... Cried my eyes out. We also read Heidi and loved it. Other ones that come to mind are the trail blazer books. We read those in place of the Christian Hero books. Same stories, just easier for my kids to follow for some reason. Papa Picolo was also a fav. We did Italy as our extra country so that fit in well. The one about the mouse in paris... what was that called??? Ay, there were so many good ones.
