How much time per day for First Form Latin?

Recommended Posts

I don't mean to hijack a thread but I my son has completed prima Latina and will soon will complete Latina Christina 1. A couple years ago I read something in Memoria Press that they recommended that path for students, skip Latina Christiana II and do First Form Latin I. I was wondering what a typical week looked like doing First Form Latin I. I will probably use the DVDs to help teach. They have been good with both Latin courses I mentioned. Thanks.

Our week looks different from week to week, based on the material to cover in each lesson--we don't always get a lesson done in a week. Ds did Prima, then LCI, and moved into First Form 1 this year. Before FF1 I could count on doing one lesson per week, but we have had to slow down a little this year. It is mostly due to the fact that the amount of writing required has jumped--we did much more work orally last year.

We start the lesson by watching the DVD and reading the student text lesson together. Much of the vocab. is review from LC1, but there is some new, which we look over and discuss. The next day, we do form drills, vocab cards, and discuss the grammar topic in the lesson. Then ds works in the workbook for 20-25 minutes. Repeat until the workbook pages are done, and then the last day give the quiz. Once a week or so we drill the Grammar questions from the back of the teacher's manual. We are generally spending 5-6 school days on each lesson, but we only do Latin 4 days a week so that puts us a little behind. If you did 5 days a week and your child was less pencil phobic than mine (or you did more orally), you might be able to do it in one week.

If your dc did well with Prima and LC1 they are likely to do well with FF 1 as well. The format is pretty similar, the method is the same and lots of overlap in vocabulary lets them focus on learning the grammar rather than struggling to remember the vocabulary. We love the whole series and plan to stick with it.

:iagree: Pretty much everything she said, except that I assign the first workbook page the same day she watches the video, and we do Latin 5 days per week. I try to assign two workbook pages whenever they are short enough to do two in 30 minutes (like the pages with diagramming). I also don't give the weekly quizzes as quizzes, I treat them as additional workbook pages.

Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear someone followed the same route.

I'm glad to hear that you allow more than a week per lesson. We don't do Latin everyday and when I viewed the video I just felt it seemed a much faster pace! It seems doable the way you have it scheduled! I appreciate that you took the time to write that out!

I have another question. What do you do when you miss a week of lessons or when you take a break? Do you go back and review...at least have them do their recitations and flashcards even if you don't do lessons...or have you found that the material does a good job of cementing and you haven't had any problems with retaining? We will be breaking for our 4 week summer break in 3 months, and I'm not sure how to handle it with the Latin. We will continue doing light math so I'm wondering if I should do the same with the Latin. Thoughts?
