EKS
My son will be going to the CC full time starting in April. He is currently in the middle of the trig portion (second semester) of Derek Owens' Precalculus course. Understandably, he placed into trig (the second of a two quarter precalculus sequence) at the CC. He has been pushing through the second semester of DO precalculus at double speed in order to finish before spring quarter at the CC starts. Now that he has placed into trig, I'm questioning whether it is worth his time to finish the DO course since he is just going to go over the same material at the CC. What do you think? regentrude
If he is already halfway through the DO course, I'd finish. A repeat exposure to math concepts is never a bad thing.
Rebel Yell
Does he have other, more pressign projects or classes that would be a better use of his time? If he really needs the time to do something else, and he has enough credits or whatever you need, I'd let him stop now if his time would be better spent on other classes. Completing the course at home might give him an advantage for the college class, of course- just figure out what he needs more. editing to add: What I'm saying is, if he;s rushng through History or a literature course he loves, or bible study/community service/artistic pursuits have gotten pushed aside to plow through this math course then maybe he needs to give more attention to those. Miss Marple
If it is stressful to get the course finished before the semester begins, I'd have him go along at the regular pace and get as much done as he can before he begins at the CC. This will give him a boost and may help his grade. But I would not worry too much about completing the course if it requires a lot of extra time esp. if it is time that is taken from other subjects or activities. jhschool
I would have him finish the Derek Owens course, but not necessarily before the CC class starts. You can do both at the same time and if necessary slack off a little (meaning go a little slower) in the DO since that one is self-paced. I would say they will complement each other and not hinder each other. Your DC will be even stronger in trig, which will benefit him in all things. Trig pops up everywhere! mom2bee
If he has time in his schedule to finish Derek Owens, I would have him finish it. At my CC most students wind up dropping out of or failing Trig the first time around. The second time is easier because of the exposure. If he can finish D.Owens now with a reasonable sacrifice, have him do it.
EKS
Ok, you all have convinced me to have him forge ahead. What's funny is that I just found out that the CC uses the same book DO uses--only it's about five editions newer. Thanks everyone for your thoughts! ASK the instructor whether he must have the new edition or whether he can use the one he already has. This could save a lot of money.
