Aloha2U
After viewing the sample pages with my little man, it seems like R&S 5 would be redundant review and that he's ready for R&S 6. It's my understanding that anything important in 5, which we would skip, will also be covered in 6. Am I missing anything? Has anyone else done this? SilverMoon
What grade is the child? Unless the DC is heading into sixth grade or higher, I'd go with the 5 book. I'd be hesitant to get too far ahead in the R&S English series, due to the maturity expected in the higher books. You can always go through 5 quickly if needed, or use the chapter reviews as placement tests. The biggest change between them is R&S doesn't spoon feed, and the DC is responsible for more of the work.
Aloha2U
You caught me! ;) I purposefully didn't include his age/grade, because I didn't necessarily think it an important factor in making this decision. We went through the samples together and the content/rigor in R&S 6 seems the next logical(?) progression for him, that is, unless I'm missing something crucial that's not shown in the R&S 5 samples... and not covered in 6. We'd begin R&S this fall when he'll be a 9yo/4th grader.
The Governess
I'm interested in an answer to this also. We are going to finish up FLL4 in a couple months, and I felt that this year was mostly review already. I'd like next year to include more new concepts. I was thinking of buying R&S 5 and 6, using 6 as my spine, and adding in some review from 5 when necessary.
SilverMoon
I wondered. :001_smile: A precocious 4th grader who truly enjoys grammar may well be able to get through the 6 book. That particular book is not what made me caution against the jump. The 7 book wasn't written with a 10yo in mind, nor the 8 for an 11yo. Then the 9 and 10 books are heavy on the high school level writing. Those books expect the maturity of the common age of the grade for which they were written. It wouldn't the same as being grades ahead in math, IMO. FWIW, I have a DD currently "ahead" in FLL, and she will be one grade ahead in R&S this fall (4 book in third grade). She is academically precocious across the board and started second grade with every school book at least a 3 or higher. Academics aside, she's very much a seven year old. I expect she could sort out the grammar of the R&S 5 book if I put extra focus on it, but the only reason I'd place her there at 8yo, knowing what's ahead, would be a very strong affinity for studying advanced grammar. I'd still take her through the 4 book quickly before jumping to the 5.
Aloha2U
Thank you, Moon! I appreciate your insight on this. Hmmm. While I'm understanding that R&S will ramp up, I still can't see justifying spending time and money on 5, especially when it appears (according to the samples) he'll be ready and able for 6. I don't want to hold him back now because of what we may or may not encounter further down the road. Wouldn't it be possible to adjust or tweak when we get there? FWIW, we'll be using WWS for writing. At this point, it seems like 6 will be the right path for us.
Erica in OR
Somebody linked this past post in a different thread about R&S English and I found it particularly interesting, since it suggests you would "buzz through" the odd books and use "the whole shebang" in the even numbered books. With WWS along with R&S 6, I'd say you're in for a meaty year. We're doing WWS1 with my 5th and 7th graders, with R&S 5 and 7. Aloha2U
Oh, I meant that when we get further down the road we'll be using WWS. We won't actually start WWS until the following year, in 5th grade.
nansk
.. We won't actually start WWS until the following year, in 5th grade. Curious; are you planning to sandwich something between WWE4 and WWS?
Aloha2U
Good question! We're finishing out this year working through the 1st half of WWE4. We'll begin next year completing the 2nd half of WWE4. This leaves the second semester for... drumroll please... trying out the writing exercises in R&S 6... and/or Poetry Primer + MCT Poetry. :) That being said, I'll have WWS 1 waiting on the shelf, just in case I decide to go ahead and have us jump into it.
