MrsBanjoClown
Ds6 (technically K level but doing some 1st grade work) has finished Abeka's 1st grade reading curriculum. He is currently reading the Primary Bible Reader (which is pretty hard reading). I'm trying to figure out what to use with him next year for phonics/reading. I have downloaded Funnix 2, and may go ahead and start him on it soon. Any thoughts on this? What else could I use with him at this level? I do plan to start him on Rod & Staff Spelling 2 next year. Five More Minutes
I found that, once my dds were reading, using a phonics-based spelling program was enough for phonics. I think R&S is phonics-based. And for reading, we just read. I have my dds read aloud a few times a week, just to make sure that their fluency is progressing. I also ask them to orally narrate back what they've read to ensure comprehension. That's it! :-)
Walking-Iris
I agree with pp. I would just continue to have him read aloud from regular books or even something like a McGuffy reader. As far as phonics instruction, after my children are reading well I use the spelling program to continue phonics work. You could get a book like OPGTR just to spot check any phonics issues that may arise. Writing/grammar programs could be useful as well--FLL or WWE etc. Narration/copywork/dictation and spelling/grammar work as well as continuing read alouds (both to him and from him) will help. Mandy in TN
Just throwing this out there- I went the other way. After after CLE's Learning to Read and 1st grade LA and reading, we used MCP Plaid Phonics C instead of a spelling program. I knew ds could remember a list of words. I wanted to just spend a little time each day reviewing phonics, so that he would be able to sound out new words when reading and be able to phonetically spell new words that he heard. After he finished MCP Word Study D in the spring of 2nd grade, we went over the spelling lists in Spelling Plus. He finished the book in 3rd grade. I don't think it was a total waste of time, but I don't know that I would do it again. This year in 4th grade he is using MCP Word Study E and next year in 5th he will use F. After this we will drop phonics/ spelling and just do vocabulary. Just another option- Mandy
