Best readable books for learning about Modern History, not textbooks?

Recommended Posts

I always feel, in spite of my best efforts to keep up, that I am missing some key insights into modern history.

Cold War to present day, 9/11 to now. I am looking for some good books to educate myself. I don't mind "tomes" but they need to be engaging and readable. They also don't have to be too general, I wouldn't mind a number of books on specific circumstances and issues either.

Titles please?
