MCT Building Language...

Is this good compared to other programs that teach beginning Latin roots? We will eventually be switching from FLL to MCT in a year and I want to do Ceasars English 1 alongside Town, but I want a good introduction before just starting him on CE because it looks kind of tough. So I thought we might do MCT's BL next year alongside FLL4 to introduce him to Latin roots. Thoughts?

The only MCT product that I have been "meh" about is that book. CE & CE2 are FABULOUS, but Building Language is Meh.

If you are doing all of Island level MCT, then go for it, it isn't BAD, it is just really thin on content IMHO. A nice gentle introduction to vocab, and it takes little time, but I wouldn't run out and buy it for Vocab if you aren't doing all of Island.

CE is not particularly tough. It's only 5 words or stems a week for 20 weeks. You can do it all aloud, that is how I do it. About an hour on "stem" weeks and about 90 min to two hours on "word" weeks. I break up the reading/talking over two shorter sessions on the word weeks. Then a few minutes at the end of the week for the quiz. Easy peasey, and AWESOME.

If this is for your 12 yo, go for the CE with Town. If you have a younger child (under 10), then BL might be good for a really gentle intro to vocab.

If you really just want a gentle intro to roots, I'd look at the game Rummy Roots or something like that.

I agree. We adore MCT, and while my dd enjoyed Building Language as part of the whole Island Level group of books, I doubt we would have as a stand-alone.

I found BL to really complement MoH and vice versa. Having the kids write a little poem and simile using the stem each week fleshed it out more, and I found that it reinforced some of the components from MoH. The kids I used it with were attempting to apply some of what they had learned in MoH to their BL poems.

I agree it would not have been as enriching by itself, but as part of the first level, we loved it.

I agree with what others have said. The book is meh. My daughter likes reading it and I guess if we really took it lots further (adding lots of activities or way more discussion I'd feel like it might be worth it. I wouldn't butit t use alone, but as another poster said within the set it's ok
